Abstract:	Dem Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts für 1500 Besucher konzipierten Bauwerk des Hofbaumeisters G. Moller wird eine gute Akustik nachgesagt. Zahlreiche bauliche Veränderungen, insbesondere der Wiederaufbau von 1951, führten aber nach Meinung der Chronisten ins Abseits. Die Rekonstruktion am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts verlangte nicht nur eine Rückbesinnung auf die ursprüngliche architektonische Idee, sondern auch ein raumakustisches Konzept, das den zukünftigen Anforderungen an ein Haus für Schauspiel, Ballett, Oper und Konzert gewachsen ist. Der Forderung einer gemeinsamen Arbeitsgruppe der Stadt Mainz und des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz folgend, wurde deshalb 1999 eine Neubewertung aller Maßnahmen zur Optimierung der Akustik vorgenommen.
