Abstract:	Das Dekagon der Kirche St. Gereon in Köln geht im Ursprung auf einen spätantiken Zentralbau zurück. Für die Sicherung und Wiederherstellung des im letzten Weltkrieg schwer beschädigten Bauwerks waren umfangreiche Untersuchungen der Struktur und Substanz erforderlich. Die Frage der Einbindung des Vorgängerbaus war dabei von wesentlicher Bedeutung. Außer bautechnischen konnten auch bauhistorische Erkenntnisse gewonnen werden. Diese führten zu einer von bisherigen Annahmen abweichenden Rekonstruktion wesentlicher Teile des spätantiken Gründungsbaus. Mit Methoden aus zwei Fachgebieten, der Bauforschung, vergleichender Bautypologie und der Tragwerkslehre konnte das Problem der Überdeckung des Zentralraums geklärt werden.
