The new railway bridge across the Neckar River in Stuttgart - Design of a particular steel sail bridge. An innovative 4-track railway crossing is being built over the Neckar River between Stuttgart and Bad Cannstatt. This crossing is part of the major project “Stuttgart 21” and will serve as a supply line for long-distance trains as well as local S-Bahn traffic to the new underground station in downtown Stuttgart. The current bridge design, which is presently under construction, is based on the proposal of a “steel sail bridge” that was selected as the winner of a design competition in 1998. During the selection process, the design proposal received high praises for fulfilling the requirements for urban development and architectural integration into the surrounding environment with a proposal which was considered a modern, perhaps even a visionary structure to which there was “no alternative” [3]. The “steel sail”, which is a key characteristic of the design, makes use of high-strength fine-grain structural steel plates with thicknesses in excess of 100mm. This is the first time that such plates are being used for a railway bridge within the Deutsche Bahn AG's (DB AG) network. This required special permitting which entailed not only highly specialized calculation methods, but also additional approval procedures from both the DB AG and the Federal Railway Authority. The following presents an in-depth discussion of the planning requirements for the thick steel plates that make up the “steel sail”, beginning with a brief overview of the entire bridge structure. Additional special features of the new Neckar Bridge, namely the deep foundation of the nine fixed piers, which are located in the core zone of the Bad Cannstatt mineral spring protection area, are reported in more detail separately [4]. |
