The Turkish Railway Administration has started to renovate and modernise the Turkish railway network in Anatolia after a long break. As the first task, a high speed railway line has been planned between the capital city Ankara and the commercial metropolis Istanbul. The section between Bozoyuk and Bilecik passes through a steep mountain range, where the old railway line and the existing highway are located right next to each other. The rail line for the new high speed route is planned to run over the steep valley of Bozoyuk and then connect to Tunnel T26. This region has a quite old geological composition with metamorphic silt and clay shales, which are folded over each other due to tectonic movement. The shales are crushed down to small pebble-cobble sized particles, significantly reducing the cohesion. The excavation work for Tunnel T26 was conducted under arduous conditions due to inadequate geological investigation.
