Albert Kahn, Stahlbau im Kontext der Moderne

Abstract:

Albert Kahn, steel construction in the context of modernity
2019 marks the year of two significant anniversaries: 100 years since the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar, but also the 150th birthday of Albert Kahn, arguably the most important industrial architect of modern times. Born in 1856 in Rhaunen, Hunsrück, Albert Kahn emigrated with his Jewish family to the New World in 1880, founded his company Kahn Associates in 1905 in Detroit, and created until his death in 1943 well over 2 000 buildings, mostly industrial steel and glass cathedrals. In the following article, after a brief review of striking examples of European industrial steel construction in the middle to end of the 19th century, some of these American steel buildings will be presented, also in their context of Bauhaus Modernism. Without any claim to completeness, this selection is based on the conception of the industrial steel construction as a “performance space”, defined by aspects such as flexibility, materials handling, construction time, daylighting, energy, climate, as well as economy. These demands were and are integrated in innovative and holistic steel constructions.
