Interference of dust formation during mechanical retrieval of deep-stored waste drums To date, radioactive waste is being stored in geological repositories around the globe. The choice of these repositories was dominantly influenced by the concept of final waste storage and not the idea of its recovery. In the case of necessary waste recovery at a later point in time, the stowing material used to stabilize the cavities resulting from the waste storage process will pose significant problems. Preliminary tests with salt concrete at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technoloy (KIT) have already revealed some of the problems the material poses when used as stowing material. For example, the dust formation resulting from salt concrete treatment inhibits remote-controlled processes as well as other tasks. It is to be expected that the areas below ground are radioactively contaminated and that the dust, if it cannot directly be collected, will disperse contamination. This report describes the small-scale tests taken on reproduced stowing material to achieve scientific data and gain practical insight on how to influence dust formation when working with salt concrete. |
