Seit dem Einsturz der ersten Tacoma-Narrows-Brücke durch winderregte Schwingungen am 7. November 1940 haben sich viele Fachleute mit dem Problem der aerodynamischen Stabilität auseinandergesetzt, aber noch kaum jemand mit den im schwingenden Tragwerk auftretenden Beanspruchungen. Dabei wird der Einsturz stets erst durch die Überbeanspruchung einzelner Bauteile der Hängebrücke möglich.
