Abstract:	Die seit der zweiten Hälfte der 60er Jahre betriebene Erweiterung des Mittellandkanals nähert sich ihrer Vollendung. Die Arbeiten in der West- und in der Scheitelhaltung sollen im wesentlichen bis zum Jahr 2000 abgeschlossen werden, die Osthaltung bis zur Elbe wird 2005 fertiggestellt sein. Der folgende Beitrag behandelt die Geschichte dieses Kanals, die Grundsätze der Planung und ihre öffentlich-rechtliche Durchsetzung in den Planfeststellungsverfahren. Den Schwerpunkt bilden die Ausführungen zur Planung und zum Bau der Brücken, insbesondere in der Landeshauptstadt Hannover, wo im Jahre 2000 die Weltausstellung EXPO stattfinden wird.
