Abstract:	Bauen in Stein und Ziegel ist in Ägypten fast schlagartig aufgenommen worden, mit Beginn der III. Dynastie (nach 2700 v. Chr.), und es wurden mit einer Reihe bautechnischer Erfindungen sehr schnell bauliche Leistungen von Weltgeltung erreicht. Während die Wortforschung nach dem "warum" fragt, ist die Frage nach dem "wie" noch weitgehend ungestellt. Bauen als neue Tätigkeit einer beginnenden Zivilisation zeigt das Entstehen von Formen aus der Bautechnik, und diese erweist sich als Anwendung wissenschaftlicher Kenntnisse; dazu einige neue Nachweise. Die bisher auf Lehrbuchrechnungen erhaltener Papyri angewiesene mathematikgeschichtliche Forschung erhält mit datierbaren Bauwerken eine neue Grundlage.
