Abstract:	Für Rückhaltesysteme am Straßenrand wie Stahlschutzplanken und Betonschutzwände gilt in Deutschland seit 1998 die Norm DIN EN 1317. Das Zustandekommen dieses Regelwerkes beeinflußten nationale und internationale Interessen, der gefundene Kompromiß erweist sich als wenig tragfähig. Prinzipielle Mängel der Prüfverfahren machen die erzielbaren Ergebnisse anfechtbar. Ein hoher meßtechnischer Aufwand, ungeeignete Anforderungen und mangelnde Objektivität bei der Bewertung stellen den Nutzen der Norm in Frage. Auf aktuelle Fehlentwicklungen wird an Beispielen verwiesen. Als zukünftige Lösungen kommen vereinfachte - vom Unfallgeschehen weitgehend abstrahierte - Verfahren in Betracht.
