Construction of the Weinberg-Bridge in Rathenow for the Federal Garden Show 2015 in Germany.
In Rathenow, a new 350 m long bicycling and footbridge spans the river Havel. The ogee Weinberg-Bridge was the main highlight of the Federal Garden Show 2015 in the Havelland. The horticultural show was located in the cities of Brandenburg/Havel, Premnitz, Rathenow and Rhinow/Stölln of the region of Brandenburg as well as in the city of Havelberg in Saxony-Anhalt.
Over the two waters (Havel and Hellers Loch), the construction consists of two arch bridges with slanted archs, an unilaterally jointed bridge deck, which enlarges until the middle of the arch and offers benches for a stay on the bridge. The unilateral connection of the ropes enables unimpeded views over the waters and the trees in the surrounding area of the bridge.
The permanent connection between the scenery of the Schwedendamm and the Weinberg is the most important part of the touristic development process of the city and the Optikpark.

Headed studs that cause splitting forces in direction of the slab thickness - Fatigue behaviour under transverse shear - enhancement of existing rules.
Headed studs, arranged in interesting innovative composite cross sections near to the slab surface, show a different load carrying behaviour due to splitting forces than studs in standard situations without any edge influence. The effective edge distance has a significant influence on the carrying capacity. For the rules given in EN 1994-2, Annex C for the case of headed studs close to the concrete surface with load direction either in longitudinal or transverse direction, enhancements and improvements are explained in detail. Especially research results on the fatigue behaviour of headed studs close to the concrete surface under transverse shear are introduced und a design equation for the fatigue resistance is provided. Furthermore the influence of a fatigue loading on the residual static resistance of headed stud arranged close to the concrete surface is discussed.

The fate of the Frey Bridge in Berlin - A memorial structure was disposed.
Karl Bernhard is one of the significant German civil engineers of the beginning of the 20th century. His two bridges along the Heerstrasse in Berlin, the Stössensee Bridge and the Frey Bridge which are crossing the Havel River, have been since 1909 of paramount importance for the East-West traffic connection of the city. The Frey Bridge was demolished in March 2015 in order to make room for a new substitution bridge. How was it possible at all that from a historical and traffic-technical point of view such an important construction has been neglected so long that it became ripe for demolition? And although it was under preservation since 1971? This article is a homage to Bernhard’s Havel Bridge and follows up its rich history.

Feldmann, Markus; Kopp, Maik; Pak, Daniel Composite dowels as shear connectors for composite beams - background to the German technical approval Steel Construction 2/2016 80-88 Articles

Kurzfassung

Composite dowels are known as powerful shear connectors in steel-concrete composite girders. They are being used more and more in practice, especially for prefabricated composite bridges. Compared with headed studs, they provide increased strength. They also exhibit good deformation capacity even in high-strength concrete. Further, their use in steel sections without an upper flange is very simple. However, a lack of standards for composite dowels with the economic clothoid and puzzle shapes has led to hesitations regarding applications, which is often due to delays in the approval process. Hence, the aim of the recently finished German research project P804 funded by FOSTA, the Research Association for Steel Application, was to solve unanswered questions concerning these innovative shear connectors and to prepare a national technical approval available for any design office or construction company. This paper describes the technical rules derived for ultimate and fatigue limit states, the structural design principles and instructions for production and construction, and provides further background information.

Lorenc, Wojciech The design concept for the steel part of a composite dowel shear connection Steel Construction 2/2016 89-97 Articles

Kurzfassung

The design concept for the steel part of a composite dowel shear connection is based on a geometric stress concept and it assumes the superposition of individual stress components resulting from longitudinal shearing and bending of a composite section. Analytical transformations of FEM calculation results for critical regions in steel dowels lead to the solution represented by closed interaction curves for the dimensionless shear resis tance of the connection versus the axial resistance of the web.

Lorenc, Wojciech Non-linear behaviour of steel dowels in shear connections with composite dowels: design models and approach using finite elements Steel Construction 2/2016 98-106 Articles

Kurzfassung

The theoretical background to the elastic design of steel dowels is presented in [1], what constitutes the basis for Fatigue Limit State (FLS) and Serviceability Limit State (SLS) are given. In this paper assumptions for Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and mechanical models are presented for both shapes covered by the German National Technical Approval [2]. The yield strength of steel is assumed in the plastic design of steel dowels, contrary to the tensile strength of steel used in the case of headed studs. A dis cussion on this aspect is presented using results obtained by finite elements which are presented in [3]. Hence, a consistent approach for ULS, SLS and FLS is established which is based on the statement that the resistance of a unit length of a shear connection with steel dowels does not depend on the size of the dowels and the ductility of the connection is a linear function of the dowel size.

Ko uch, Maciej; Rowi ski, S?awomir Elastic behaviour of the steel part of a shear connection with MCL composite dowels - Design basis for serviceability and fatigue limit states Steel Construction 2/2016 107-114 Articles

Kurzfassung

In this paper the authors present numerical and analytical approaches for establishing rules for dimensioning MCL steel connectors for serviceability and fatigue limit states. Two unit models were adopted for the stress calculations by means of FEM: the first one for taking into account the notch effect of the longitudinal cutting line on the stress pattern in a uniformly tensioned steel plate, the second one for determining the stress pattern in a steel connector due to longitudinal shearing between the steel and concrete parts of the beam. A mathematical approach for establishing an envelope of the connector's resistance is presented. A detailed study of the fatigue behaviour of steel connectors is presented in the second part of the paper. Possible crack patterns and their development mechanisms are described, justified by appropriate FEA and test results.

Kopp, Maik; Pak, Daniel; Feldmann, Markus Effects of transverse tension load on the static capacity and fatigue resistance of composite dowels Steel Construction 2/2016 115-121 Articles

Kurzfassung

Composite dowels are powerful shear connectors in steel-concrete composite structures, especially for prefabricated composite bridges. The advantages of composite dowels over other shear connectors are their increased strength and sufficient slip capacity even in high-strength concrete. The National Technical Approval for Germany [1], [2] from 2013 allows the design of composite structures with composite dowels for hogging and sagging moments under static and cyclic loading. However, the design of structures with cyclic loading in combination with centric tension perpendicular to the composite dowels (transverse tension) is neglected. Therefore, one part of national project P967 “External reinforcement for composite bridges”, funded by FOSTA, the Research Association for Steel Application, was to determine how transverse tension affects the static capacity and fatigue resistance of composite dowels. To investigate this effect, two test series, each with six push-out tests, were carried out. The test setup and the results of the static and cyclic shear tests in combination with transverse tension are presented in this paper.

Luo, Guoqing; Mensinger, Martin Anchorage of external reinforcement in the case of rigid clamping Steel Construction 2/2016 122-131 Articles

Kurzfassung

In the case of frame bridges with external reinforcement, the reinforcing elements have to be anchored in the abutment wall. Owing to the interaction of negative bending moment and longitudinal shear force in the abutment area, the force transfer between concrete, external steel reinforcement and normal steel reinforcement is complex. Two frame structure tests were carried out to investigate the loadbearing behaviour and rational anchorage length of external reinforcement in abutments. Two different anchorage lengths were tested, and the structural behaviour and failure modes of the two specimens were compared and analysed. The results indicate that the anchorage length has a great influence on the loadbearing capacity, and the pull-out effect at the end of the external reinforcement should be paid special attention. The detail stress distribution and the M-V interaction in the anchored external reinforcement were obtained from the tests and the results fit well with the theoretical calculation. Mechanical models are proposed to evaluate the pull-out effect and optimize the anchorage length of the external reinforcement.

Lechner, Thomas; Gehrlein, Sebastian Felix; Fischer, Oliver Structural behaviour of composite dowels in thin UHPC elements Steel Construction 2/2016 132-137 Articles

Kurzfassung

Composite dowels with different shapes have been developed and used in composite members during the last two decades. At the Chair of Concrete and Masonry Structures at Technical University of Munich (TUM), composite dowels with a clothoid shape are used for filigree composite beams and columns. In both types of application the composite dowels are used as external reinforcement and Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is chosen instead of normal-strength concrete. This article describes mainly the results of the preliminary push-out tests that were carried out in order to determine the structural behaviour of composite dowels in thin UHPC elements and verify the influence of the UHPC web thickness, the steel thickness of the shear connector, the concrete compressive strength and the influence of reinforcement on the loadbearing capacity and failure modes. The paper also includes an overview of and the outlook for the experiments with composite beams and composite columns.

Classen, Martin; Hegger, Josef Anchorage of composite dowels Steel Construction 2/2016 138-150 Articles

Kurzfassung

In steel-concrete composite beams, lifting effects between the steel section and the concrete slab usually occur incidentally and have comparatively small load ordinates compared with the shear forces transferred. For this reason, lifting forces are generally irrelevant for the dimensioning of the composite joint. Nevertheless, this statement does not apply if shear connectors are used for the systematic anchorage of pull-out forces. Although the anchorage behaviour of conventional shear connectors, e.g. headed studs, has already been studied extensively, appropriate investigations into the anchorage behaviour of concrete composite dowels are lacking, especially for composite dowels in slender or cracked concrete slabs. In this paper, the anchorage behaviour of a puzzle-shaped concrete composite dowel is investigated in cracked and uncracked concrete. To this end, particular test setups were developed. All tests were simulated using a three-dimensional, non-linear finite element model. Finally, an engineering model for calculating the anchoring capacity of single composite dowels and composite dowel groups in reinforced and unreinforced concrete is presented.
