To transfer bending moments in building components consisting of a material without tensile strength always requires a simultaneously acting normal force. Accordingly, masonry walls exposed to horizontal loads (e.g. wind) require a minimum vertical load, so that the resultant stress at the mid-height of the wall remains the same within the cross-section. As part of the A2 amendment to DIN EN 1996-3/NA, this verification of walls subjected to low vertical loads, such as outer walls on the top floor exposed to high wind load was implemented in the National Annex. Part 3 of DIN EN 1996-3 includes a similar standard regulation for verification of the minimum vertical load, which is based on an arch effect within the wall cross-section.
Based on this technical background and taking into account the main influencing parameters, a verification model is presented here which realistically describes the load-bearing behaviour of unreinforced masonry walls subjected primarily to bending. Apart from the bending moments due to wind load, an initial eccentricity of the wall as well as second order effects due to wall deformations also have to be taken into account. In addition, a simple approximation equation is provided for the practical determination of the required minimum vertical load.

This paper suggests a detailed parametric study, which has been drawn up in connection with the question of the necessity of verification of masonry wall by a minimum vertical load subject to bending and normal force by the author and his team [7]. It assumes the actual eccentricities from supporting due floors and takes into account the second order theory in middle of wall according to DIN EN 1996-1-1 or the German NA. In some cases, the model is derived for very high wind loads to its limits. Using the arch model which is introduced in DIN EN 1996-1-1 and may be applied by NA, is helpful and effective. This method may provide higher capacity rather than for example, with the bar or plate model.
In this article the verification by means of the arch model will be presented and discussed. It is also shown that, forming an arch opposing to the horizontal wind load and low vertical loads may not come to a stability failure.

Kurzfassung

Just as with shear stress on the edges of masonry walls, prestressing through the confinement and restraint of all four sides of the wall improves the load-carrying capacity under lateral loads.
The extra load arising from prestressing leads to increased flexural strength of the masonry. The confinement of the edges results in relatively smaller span moments. In this case, the torsional stiffness of the reinforced concrete frame is important. This is determined by the frame itself as well as by its integration within the building.
As a supplement to [4], an examination of panel loading was also performed within the guidelines of a research project at the TU Dresden, Chair for Structural Design, on behalf of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning on the subject of “Confined Masonry as an Option for Increasing the Load-Carrying Capacity of Stiffening Walls”[9].
The various influences are to be initially researched on the basis of various analytical observations and a small numerical study. A thorough, experimentally-based clarification of the load-carrying capacity of the panels was not possible within the framework of the research project.

The model uncertainty has significant role in determination of safety factor. Eurocode has been considered partial factor covering uncertainties in the resistance model. Moreover, the model uncertainty has important role in full probabilistic verification. A stochastic analysis may yield to realistic results, only if the uncertainties have been involved in the calculation, properly.
The uncertainty in predicted load-carrying model may be identified by comparing the observed (experimental records) load-carrying behaviour with the predicted value. Some general recommendations for considering uncertainty in probabilistic verifications are available in literature. In this study, the deviation of predicted values according to DIN EN 1996-1-1/NA model of masonry shear wall from test results has been derived. The best-fitted distribution with associated statistical parameters (type of distribution, mean and coefficient of variation) has been proposed for uncertainty model. The uncertainty models have been compared with recommendations in the literature.

Abstract: Arch bridges still form a large part of the bridge stock in German-speaking countries and in Europe. In general, they have a high loadbearing capacity for vertical loads. However, only a limited number of research investigations into the capacity of these bridges to resist horizontal impact have been carried out. In this paper we describe static and dynamic tests for the evaluation of the loadbearing capacity of masonry arches exposed to horizontal loads in transverse direction. Furthermore, a simple engineering model is developed for such load cases.

From the middle of the 19th century until the beginning of World War I, many buildings were built in the Neo-Gothic style. In this period, Gothic elements were built regarding the former needs to save material. These lightweight and thin vaults are often relatively fragile support systems. They tend to show systemic damages in the form of significant crack patterns in the vault caps and arches. In the research project Preservation of Neo-Gothic vault structures, typical damages of Neo-Gothic vaulted structures are analyzed with the objective to find sustainable and rehabilitative measures. In this context, since 2011, numerical and experimental studies have been carried out on a reference structure. Measured values of a 3D laser scanning, including all the imperfections of the structure, provide the basis of the geometry model, created for the finite element simulation. The system behavior was studied experimentally in the non-critical load range with a load test for the calibration of this numerical model. In this paper, the project framework as well as the implementation and the evaluation of the load test are presented. In further papers, the transfer of the geodetic measurement data to the numerical model and the consideration of the load test results within a realistically finite element simulation will be addressed.

Basierend auf den Forderungen nach schlanken Konstruktionen und einer Optimierung des Bauablaufs, gewinnt die Slim-Floor-Bauweise zunehmend an Bedeutung. Die Bemessung solcher Bauteile kann jedoch nicht allein auf Grundlage der Europäischen Regelwerke für den Verbundbau erfolgen. Es gelten einige Besonderheiten, die durch ergänzende Bemessungsregeln zu erfassen sind. An dieser Stelle wird die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Bemessung im Bauzustand, die Querschnittsklassifizierung und die Biegebemessung gelenkt. Neben den klassischen Querschnitten, bestehend aus gewalzten Profilen mit untergeschweißter Gurtplatte, werden dabei auch in die Decke integrierte hohlkastenartige Profilformen untersucht.

Determination of moment resistance for composite shallow-floor beams - Additional design rules for slim-floor beams.
Due to the demand for sustainable buildings and slim constructions, composite slim-floor systems become more important. The present European Codes do not include complete design rules for shallow-floor beams. In the design, additional regulations have to be considered for ultimate limit state, serviceability limit state and fire design. In this paper the characteristics in erection state, for the cross section classification, the plastic moment resistance and the influence of transverse bending moments are presented. Apart from traditional sections consisting of rolled profiles also floor slabs with integrated steel box-sections have been considered.
