Schweißer und ihre Tätigkeit auf Baustellen stellen spezifische Anforderungen an ihr Werkzeug. Moderne, dem aktuellen Stand der Technik entsprechende Stromquellen erfüllen sie umfassend. Beispielhaft dafür steht ein Elektroden- und WIG-DC-Schweißsystem der 150-A-Klasse. Seine Leistungsmerkmale und sein Anwendungsspektrum bilden eine gelungene Verbindung aus Technik, Qualität, Wirtschaftlichkeit und Bedienerfreundlichkeit.

Kurzfassung

Gusset plate anchorage devices are widely used in long-span cable-stayed bridges with steel girders because the force in the cable can be transferred directly to the main girder via the gusset plate, which is very convenient for inspection and maintenance. The disadvantage is the severe stress concentration between gusset plate and steel tube, and the cruciform joint between gusset plate, top flange and web of main girder. This paper presents the static analysis of and experimental research into a gusset plate anchorage device. The magnitude and stress distribution of each load case were analysed very carefully, and the stress history of typical points was also monitored to indicate the structural behaviour. Under the load of the maximum design cable force, the anchorage device exhibits linear elastic behaviour on the whole. The von Mises stress at some monitored points reaches the yield stress when the load is 1.28 times the maximum design cable force. Ultrasonic inspection of the test model revealed no strength cracking or plate buckling, which indicates that the safety margin of the anchorage device is sufficient and complies with the requirements of bridge design code. By comparing calculations and test results it could be proved that FEM can be utilized for the structural analysis of gusset plate anchorage devices and that the calculation accuracy exceeds 70 % for most monitored points.

Kurzfassung

A new steel-lined pressure shaft and surge tank are being constructed for the existing Kaunertal high-head hydropower plant. The inclined shaft with a diameter of 4.3 m is approx. 1430 m long and is designed for a pressure head of 100 bar. The steel lining is fully embedded and installed inside the precast concrete segmental lining, which was earlier erected as the tunnelling work progressed. Steel design criteria take into account that the internal pressure is shared between the pipe steel and the rock mass according to the stiffness ratio of lining and rock mass.
To support the development of steel lining design and material specifications prior to award of contract, the permissible steel strength vs. ductility was investigated together with the compatibility between pipe material and welding material and the brittle fracture behaviour. In particular, the high-performance steel and welding materials require a detailed fracture mechanics analysis to establish whether selected materials fit project requirements. Extensive tests were carried out on sample pipes - partly on a full-size model - by the bidders to select the steel and welding materials. An analysis of the tests revealed interesting results and dependencies on material strength, welding process, filler material and other parameters.
An overview of the project, which is being implemented between 2012 and 2015, the design criteria for the steel-lined shaft and the material specification are presented in this paper.

Kurzfassung

In this contribution the historical development of materials and applied welding procedures in the field of hydropower plant shafts and penstocks is summarized. Based on the experiences and failure cases observed in the past in combination with modern methods, a best practice solution for the qualification of materials and processes is proposed. Additionally to weldability based on strength and toughness, fracture mechanics, fatigue behaviour and stress corrosion sensitivity have to be considered. All these measures have to be validated by application of related advanced NDT processes.

In the construction of pressurized conduits for hydropower plants, segmented bends (mitre bends) are widely used where ducts change direction. In practical applications, different approaches are used to consider the effects for exposed mitre bends in structural steel design. However, formulae for mitre bends embedded in rock or concrete for penstocks in underground installations have not been available so far.
In view of these restrictions on the calculation of underground mitre bends, the authors have developed analytical formulae for mitre bends embedded in rock by introducing terms for the elastic foundation of the rock mass to extend the classical differential equation for cylindrical shells. These formulae allow the whole local stress state in the bend to be calculated, in particular for the stress concentrations at the intersection of the mitre. The formulae were then validated by comparing them with the results of non-linear FE analyses.

After an interruption in the last decades of the 20th century, a number of pressure shafts with steel linings are presently being built or planned. These are frequently connected with the use of high-strength steel and with pumped storage plants. Larger dimensions and higher dynamic loads demand further research beyond the previous state of the art of the 1980s. An advanced concept by the second author, involving the geotechnical interaction of steel lining and rock mass, opens up new potential for the design of linings. This approach postulates ductility requirements for the steel used for liners which may be challenging for the field of modern high-strength steels. This paper provides an overview of the latest investigations dealing with the design of steel liners for internal pressure and the required properties for high-strength steel.

Kurzfassung

Owing to the increased use of high-strength steel (HSS) grades for steel linings in pressure shafts, the fatigue check becomes more and more critical for the proper design of such components. Eurocode 3, AD 2000 and IIW Recommendations do not consider the specific needs of liners with grouting openings (also called nipples) in combination with the higher steel grades. Therefore, a three-year research project of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) was conducted to focus on investigating the fatigue strength of grouting nipples. This project saw a new design concept for steel linings with nipples established which takes into consideration the design concept of the Eurocode. The new findings regarding the fatigue strength of nipples were embedded in this concept.

Kurzfassung

The design and manufacture of factory-made self-supporting sandwich panels are covered by European standard EN 14509. Two new European Recommendations extend the potential applications for the standard, providing information about the influence of openings on the loadbearing behaviour of the panels and about the possibility of supporting beams, purlins and cladding rails against stability failures. The new European Recommendations were prepared by the European Joint Committee on Sandwich Constructions.
