Fujita, Masanori; Nakamura, Makoto; Awazu, Kengo; Iwata, MamoruEffects of the clearance between the core plate and restraining part on the structural performance of the buckling-restrained brace using steel mortar planksSteel Construction1/20221-12Articles

Kurzfassung

The clearance between the core plate and the restraining part of the buckling-restrained brace using steel mortar planks (BRBSM) considerably affects the failure mode and hysteretic characteristics of the brace. A clearance adjustment construction is proposed for the BRBSM which can control the clearance through partially pasting clearance adjustment materials and polishing the mortar plank surface. First, the clearance adjustment construction workflow and quality control are demonstrated, and it is verified that the clearance can be assured by fabricating specimens. Further, the effects of the difference in clearance between the core plate and restraining part on the structural performance of the BRBSM in terms of failure behaviour, increase strength ratio, buckling mode and cumulative plastic strain energy ratio are evaluated by conducting a cyclic axial loading test.

Ernst & Sohn (Hrsg.)Sonderheft: European Steel Design Awards 2019Steel Construction10/20191-60Sonderheft

Kurzfassung

As steel is the most important and flexible construction material with various further advantages, it is produced and used in a wide range of products in different qualities. It is the extraordinary, persistent and innate ability of steel to be innovative that enables it to maintain its position as one of the most essential construction materials. Due to its huge potentials to develop products and technologies, steel can be implemented in new spheres of serviceability. Therefore, ECCS brings into focus the actual utilisation of these potentials, frequently gives awards to encourage creative and outstanding use of steel in architecture and construction in Europe. Aim of ECCS is also to make these awards, given since 1997, internationally recognised competitions in the field of steel construction.

Steel structures can be sculptured to almost any shape or form. In other words, an architect can accomplish whatever he or she imagines, by using steel. You will see it in this publication the best of each of the projects selected by the international expert jury, which met in Brussels on 18 June to determine the European Steel Design Awards winners 2019.

The new intercity line Toluca - Mexico City has a length of 57.7 km. The daily passenger estimate is about 230,000 to 300,000. The investment volume amounts to 2.5 bn US$. Its special feature is the MAURER seismic protection system for two long viaducts. The company installs for this purpose so-called guided cross-ties, the first absolutely earthquake-proof railroad bridge expansion joints. Together with a complex system consisting of bearings, dampers and elastomeric spring isolators they ensure structural stability, function and safety for various load cases: from braking and acceleration forces in normal operation to the Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE). MAURER startet to work for this project in 2016. The last step scheduled is the installation of the guided cross-ties at viaduct 4 in the third quarter of 2020. (© MAURER SE)

Braun, Matthias; da Costa, Job Duarte; Obiala, Renata; Odenbreit, ChristophDesign of single-span beams for SLS and ULS using semi-continuous beam-to-column joints - Part 1: Beams with constant bending stiffness and joints according to EN 1993-1-8Steel Construction1/20161-15Article

Kurzfassung

This article explains a method for determining how semi-continuous joints influence the deflection, natural frequency and bending moment distribution of single-span beams with constant inertia under uniformly distributed load. The method is adequate for simple hand calculations, allowing the structural engineer to assess potential savings already in the pre-design phase. Further, the economical potential of semi-continuous joints according to EN 1993-1-8 [1] is demonstrated by an application example.

Stadler, Martin; Mensinger, MartinSimplified finite element analyses for fire design of slabs including membrane actionSteel Construction1/20141-7Articles

Kurzfassung

Simplifications to finite element models are the subject of this article. These simplifications form part of a new method for the fire design of concrete and composite slab systems with partly unprotected secondary steel beams, taking into account tensile membrane action. Internal forces can be determined with the simplified model and cross-section design procedures can be applied to calculate the required reinforcement amount equivalent to ambient temperature. The FE model is simplified by replacing the thermal analysis with a substitute thermal loading. Non-linear material behaviour is taken into account via a reduced model stiffness, which allows an efficient linear elastic calculation. The new method presented therefore enables the simple and efficient design of slab systems for fire.
