Breitschaft, Gerhard | CJEU Judgment, Standardisation and Eurocode 6 / EuGH-Urteil, Normung und Eurocode 6 - Aktuelle Fragen im Mauerwerksbau - Focus on current challenges for the masonry industry from a regulatory perspective / Eine Betrachtung aus bauaufsichtlicher Perspektive | Mauerwerk | 1/2016 | 3-8 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungThis article reviews current challenges for the masonry industry from a regulatory perspective. First, the CJEU judgment and its consequences will be discussed. The judgment of 16 October 2014 will make fundamental changes in the German regulatory system necessary. How these will be implemented is not yet clear so that this article can only give an overview of the present situation (September 2015) in the discussions. What is clear is that the changes in the regulatory system will have repercussions in the field of standardisation. These repercussions will be outlined - in general and specifically for the masonry sector - in the second part of this article. Finally, the paper will look at the progress in the implementation of Eurocode 6 (Design of masonry structures). x

KurzfassungThis article illustrates the solid building envelope both as an integral system and in terms of its potential for additive manufacturing. The Façade Research Group at the TU Delft works on the building envelope, investigating strategic and process support for development and planning processes and renovation technologies, as well as functionally integrated building envelopes. The Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design at the TU Darmstadt undertakes research and development in the areas of materials technologies (glass, polymers) and additive manufacturing as they relate to building structure. x

Walberg, Dietmar | Solid and timber construction in residential buildings / Massiv- und Holzbau bei Wohngebäuden | Mauerwerk | 1/2016 | 16-31 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungIn the context of a comprehensive analysis of the current situation in Germany’s residential sector as regards construction costs and developments in these, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für zeitgemäßes Bauen e.V. (ARGE) undertook a specific study to investigate the use of the main materials for building walls (using both solid and timber construction methods) in residential buildings. In order to obtain comparable data, two buildings typical of the residential sector were modelled: an apartment block and a detached house. These reflect the current building situation in Germany. x
Graubner, Carl-Alexander; Förster, Valentin; Schmitt, Michael; Koob, Benjamin; Pohl, Sebastian | Sustainable building with masonry / Nachhaltiges Bauen mit Mauerwerk | Mauerwerk | 1/2016 | 32-48 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungEcology, energy and sustainability are crucial socio-economic keywords, especially for the construction and real estate industry. In recent years, the masonry industry faced related sustainability issues intensively in order to keep its ability of operating in a market setting which is increasingly characterized by sustainability dogmata. Scientific analyses and studies on an objectified sustainability basis - such as established certification systems - show that masonry is absolutely competitive with all other market-relevant construction methods. Therefore, the first part of this paper deals with a sustainability assessment of buildings made of masonry as well as of other construction materials. x
Zehfuß, Jochen; Mittmann, Thorsten | Current developments in fire protection - Changeover to design and classification according to the Eurocode / Aktuelle Entwicklungen im Brandschutz - Umstellung auf die Bemessung und Klassifizierung nach europäischen Normen | Mauerwerk | 1/2016 | 49-63 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungThe European requirements for fire safety design and testing of structural masonry members are already the governing requirements in many cases. In principle, both the European and the German classification may be used according to the Bauregelliste. However, the latter may only be used when European classification of a member or construction material is not possible because the appropriate European standards do not exist. The European standards do not differ fundamentally from the German standard DIN 4102-2. One significant difference is that according to the DIN 4102-2, it was required to carry out two tests with the most unfavourable result governing, while according to the European standard, only one test is required. According to the EN Standard, the tests for fire resistance and the reaction to fire are carried out separately. There are other differences related to the pressure in the furnace as well as the use of plate thermocouples instead of jacketed thermocouples. Fire safety design of masonry is carried out in accordance with EC 6-1-2 and the National Annex. Only the members not regulated in the EC 6-1-2, e.g. pre-cast masonry members, non-load-bearing walls, lintels, connections and joints, should be designed and checked according to the revised DIN 4102-4. x
Vogel, Albert; Kornadt, Oliver | Sound insulation in residential building - the latest state of standardisation / Schallschutz für den Wohnungsbau - letzter Status der Normung | Mauerwerk | 1/2016 | 64-69 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungA new draft of a complete standard series DIN 4109 “Sound insulation in buildings” with four parts - “Requirements”, “Verification of compliance with the requirements by calculation”, “Building elements catalogue” and “Guidance for testing acoustics in buildings” was published in 2013. These include significant changes regarding sound protection in line with qualities that have been regularly determined in monitored buildings with standardised construction methods. It includes a few more stringent requirements for airborne and impact sound insulation compared with DIN 410 9:1989. Another significant alteration is the new Part 4 “Guidance for testing acoustics in buildings”. This delivers a detailed practical description of how the sound reduction or the level of impact sound can be measured. Part 4 also provides assistance to the user with the measurement of airborne sound in the lower frequency range. This article also investigates how it can be advantageous to consider a greater range of frequency for the evaluation of sound insulation. x
Maas, Anton | Energy Conservation Ordinance 2014 - On the way to the nearly zero energy building / EnEV 2014 - auf dem Weg zum Niedrigstenergiegebäude | Mauerwerk | 1/2016 | 70-83 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungThe tightening of the Energy Conservation Ordinance in 2016 provides the first step toward the introduction of nearly zero energy buildings. The level of performance for residential buildings after 2020 will most likely attain an energy quality close to the primary energy consumption of the KfW Efficiency House 55 today, at least regarding performance. The following report describes the requirements methodology of the Energy Conservation Ordinance 2014, including the KfW promotion, and provides calculation examples to clarify the issues. x
