Günther, Matthias | Added value and employment effects of brick industry / Wertschöpfungs- und Beschäftigungseffekte der Mauersteinindustrie | Mauerwerk | 2/2019 | 73-77 | Berichte |
KurzfassungIn Germany manufacturing and distribution of bricks care for direct employment of about 10,000 persons. Procurement of preliminary work and the utilisation of the payed salaries, social security contributions, taxes, and profits secure more than further 25,000 jobs. It can be assumed that a substitution of masonry by other building materials is not possible in the near term, since the masonry has increased its market share in the past few years even slightly. Thereby the masonry participates in the added value based on the shell construction of buildings in the amount of 32.4 billion Euro, and in the employment of 480,000 working people. The expansion of these buildings leads to further added value in the amount of 39 billion Euro and further employment of 691, 000 employees. x
Flora, Matthias; Weiser, Torsten; Zech, Philipp; Ruepp, Anna; Bergmeister, Konrad | Added value in mechanized tunnelling by intelligent systems / Mehrwerte im maschinellen Tunnelvortrieb durch intelligente Systeme | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2021 | 592-599 | Topics |
KurzfassungBoth conventional and mechanized tunnelling have a fantastic tradition. The technical progress of the industry moved in step with social developments, characterized by crises and leaps in innovation. In the field of mechanized tunnelling, the driving force for some years now has been the desire to excavate heterogeneous construction sites with changes in tunnelling modes without the need for costly conversions underground. In addition, two innovation surges are currently discernible. On the one hand, the demands on innovation and technology management again follow a societal challenge, namely the goal of climate neutrality. On the other hand, digital processes and tools are changing all areas of our lives at an enormous speed, which means that the construction industry will also undergo a transformation in the coming years. Automation, robotics, the Internet of Things, machine learning, or artificial intelligence are all gradually encroaching on current processes and methods. x

KurzfassungWhile classic joining techniques in steel construction have undergone advancements, fundamental problems still remain. The utilisation of structural bonding can remedy the situation, but despite having many advantages, has not been able to establish itself in civil engineering and specifically steel construction. The reason for this are doubts by engineers, architects and contractors regarding the verifiability, durability and load bearing capacity of bonded steel constructions. In order to facilitate the use of the innovative joining technique in construction, it is necessary to process bonded joints close to standardisation. x

Mähr, T.; Fink, J. | Adoption of the response spectra method for calculating the dynamic response of railway bridges | Steel Construction | 4/2010 | 212-217 | Article |
KurzfassungThis paper introduces a simplified method for calculating the dynamic response of railway bridges under train service loads. Response spectrum analysis, which has proved itself in structural dynamics, has been adopted for the given problem. If essential parameters such as the natural frequency, mass, span and damping of a bridge are known, the maximum response quantities can be looked up in a diagram. Preparation of the response spectra diagrams is computationally intensive but they do provide an easy and quick way of obtaining accurate results. This method is exemplified for single-span bridges and the load models defined in the Eurocode. However, it is possible to expand the theory to more complex bridge systems and other load models without difficulty. With the aid of this method, the maximum dynamic response of a bridge under moving loads can be calculated in an efficient and convenient way with the accuracy required by the current design codes. x

KurzfassungThe investigation measures carried out for the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel provide a demonstrative example for dealing with geological risk through appropriate investigation at each state of the project. Due to the length and deep overburden, it was impossible to completely investigate the entire length of the tunnel in advance. The concept in the southern sections intended the performance of probing ahead of the machine only in particularly critical locations, with the tunnelling and lining concept for the individual sections being designed to cope with possible hazard scenarios for the section and the provision of more intensive probing ahead of the continued drive in order to specify the necessary constructional measures. In addition, massive formation water ingress was to be expected in certain sections, which could reach a high quantity and high pressures (up to 200 bars). x

Laubbichler, Jürgen; Schwind, Thomas; Gakis, Angelos; Sanz, Alejandro; Soto, Francisco | Advanced design of large cavern intersections in soft ground without conventional bar reinforcement | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 4/2021 | 367-376 | Topics |
KurzfassungThe design of three mined stations in Toronto as part of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Project involved several intersections of large tunnels situated in the heterogenous, water-bearing glacial till deposits. The most challenging openings, 220 m2 each, were formed in the two sides of the 18 m high cross-cut tunnels to allow the excavation of the 18 m wide platform caverns. A key objective for the design was the optimization of the tunnel shapes and the advanced simulation of the fibre reinforced shotcrete properties, to allow these openings in the initial tunnel linings to be achieved without conventional bar reinforcement or thickenings, thus simplifying and accelerating the construction, whilst reducing health and safety risks. x
Sturk, R.; Stille, B. | Advanced Ground Freezing at the Hallandsås Project, Sweden | Geomechanik und Tunnelbau | 5/2008 | 512-517 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungAn extensive fault zone within the Hallandsås Project Sweden, a railway tunnel project in southwest of Sweden, is subject of an advanced ground freezing operation in order to facilitate TBM excavation through this section. The rock mass within the fault zone consists of a completely decomposed gneiss and amphibolite in combination with 10 to 12 bar ground water pressure. Ground freezing was carried out in 16 horizontally drilled freeze holes with a length of 100 m. Within the 10.6 m diameter final tunnel section a small 5 m diameter pilot tunnel was excavated through the frozen area. The design and execution of the freezing and excavation operations have followed the observational method. This included prediction, monitoring and follow up of all parameters associated with design of frozen ground, such as strength and creep properties, as well as design aspects on the final segmental lining installed by the TBM. By thorough project management and active design it is possible to control the involved processes and achieve a transparent methodology in predicting and executing tunnelling using the freezing method. x
Moritz, B.; Matt, R.; Graf, F.; Brandtner, M. | Advanced Observation Techniques for Sophisticated Shallow Tunnel Projects - Experience Gained Using Innovative Monitoring Methods at the Lainzer Tunnel LT31 | Geomechanik und Tunnelbau | 5/2008 | 466-476 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungThe article presents experiences gained during construction of the approximately 3 km long urban Lainzer Tunnel (LT31), driven with side-wall galleries under shallow overburden. The structure's safety is assessed mainly on the basis of 3D deformation analyses, comparison of predicted and observed system behaviour, evaluation of shotcrete stress, and online monitoring of surface settlements. Displacements of the tunnel face, correlating with pre-face surface settlements, are monitored by an innovative, fully automatic face monitoring system (OBM). A correlation between volume loss (surface) and volume increase (face) could be established. A test field comparing fibreglass anchors (GRP) with IBO face bolts revealed - contrary to expectations - no appreciable reduction of surface settlement due to GRP anchors. However, temporary inverts constructed in the side wall galleries in combination with IBO face bolts support turned out to be effective in reducing horizontal convergence and resulting settlements of the ground surface in a sensitive residential area. x

Rademacher, Dennis; Ochojski, Wojciech; Lorenc, Wojciech; Ko uch, Maciej | Advanced solutions with hot-rolled sections for economical and durable bridges | Steel Construction | 3/2018 | 196-204 | Articles |
KurzfassungGrowing problems in terms of damage to bridges correlated with - in some cases huge - long-term impacts on road traffic have shown how essential it is to ensure the durability of the infrastructure and thus the mobility of people as well as the exchange of goods. Corrosion damage can be sustainably avoided in future by employing alternative protection systems for steel and composite bridges. Both hot-dip galvanizing with a coating thickness of at least 200 &mgr;m and weathering steel offer crucial advantages over traditional coating systems when considering the whole life cycle of a bridge: They require no maintenance, and so traffic disruption can be avoided. When using these systems in combination with hot-rolled sections, there are further significant advantages as they render composite bridges more economical and durable, particularly when it comes to short and medium spans. Standard higher strengths with steel grade S460 allow for more economical cross-sections, with weight- and cost-savings of often 20-30 % compared with welded built-up sections in grade S355. Sophisticated designs employing rolled sections can achieve not only small and medium spans, but also longer ones, e.g. arch bridges with spans > 100 m. This article describes new trends in Europe using hot-rolled sections in steel and composite bridges. x
White, Donald W.; Slein, Ryan; To ay, O uzhan | Advancements in the stability design of steel frames considering general non-prismatic members - Extended Keynote of SDSS 2019 | Steel Construction | 1/2020 | 2-9 | Articles |
KurzfassungThis paper discusses an innovative approach to the design of planar steel frames composed of prismatic and/or non-prismatic members. The method evaluates the member stability limit states using an inelastic eigenvalue buckling analysis configured with column, beam and beam-column inelastic stiffness reduction factors derived from the ANSI/AISC 360-16 Specification. The resulting procedure provides a relatively rigorous evaluation of all member strength limits accounting for moment and axial force variations along the member lengths, non-prismatic geometry effects, general out-of-plane bracing conditions and beneficial end restraint from less-critical adjacent, unbraced segments and/or from end conditions. The approach uses a geometric non-linear pre-buckling analysis based on the AISC direct analysis method to estimate the in-plane internal forces. Given these forces, an eigenvalue buckling solution is conducted to evaluate the overall member stability. Other limit states are addressed through cross-section strength checks using the internal forces determined from the geometric non-linear load-displacement analysis. Calculations using this approach are compared with results from recent experimental tests. x
