An amazing ring - the new ÖAMTC-Headquarter - An architectural highlight along the Vienna's southeast tangential freeway.
In March 2017, the new ÖAMTC-Headquarter, located along of one of Austria's heaviest trafficked roads, was opened to public in Vienna's third district, Baumgasse 129. The new so called mobility centre boasts nine levels of offices, conference spaces and training facilities, having a gross floor area of 27 000 m2. This new and innovative workplace environment consolidates five former local branches. The plan view of the building equals a rim of a wheel where each building wing represents one of five spokes. The ring facade, with a length of 230 m and a height of almost 17 m represents the architectonical highlight of the new ÖAMTC-Headquarter and is connecting the spokes. The ring facade is both, a noise barrier and a main escape path. Due to the external location, there is only one internal escape stair, hence allowing an optimized floor layout. The prominent steel and glass ring structure of the building was designed using and consequent practicing BIM (Building Information Modeling) by the Architects, the Engineers and the Executing Companies. Unger Steel Group located in Oberwart were responsible for the realisation of the steel structure of the ring facade, storey car park, hangar and the helipad as well as the seven atrium stairs.

Bedair, OsamaAn analytical expression to determine "realistic" shear buckling stress in cold-formed lipped channelsSteel Construction1/201553-58Articles

Kurzfassung

Current North American and European design provisions ignore the rotational restraint when evaluating local web shear buckling stresses in cold-formed steel channels. This paper offers a new analytical expression for computing local buckling shear stresses in cold-formed channel members taking into account the rotational restraints imposed by the flanges and the lips. The expression derived is suitable for hand calculations and can replace current code expressions in order to achieve economical steel designs. Comparisons with existing design formulas currently used in practice for the limiting conditions show a difference within 5 %.

Ballio, G.; Bernuzzi, C.; Castiglioni, C. A.An approach for the seismic design of steel storage pallet racks (Ein Verfahren zur Bemessung stählerner Palettenlager unter seismischer Einwirkung)Stahlbau11/1999919-928Fachthemen

Tokgöz, NurayAn assessment method for fine-grained sedimentary materials excavated by EPB TBMGeomechanics and Tunnelling4/2016326-337Topics

Kurzfassung

The aims of this study are to find a solution for the problems (lumping, adhesion, and clogging) encountered with fine-grained sedimentary materials, minimize the time and cost of excavation, and decrease the potential environmental effects due to soil conditioning chemicals used in the process of excavating a waste water tunnel. Therefore, this study will contribute important technical knowledge regarding design and implementation of excavation with TBM to the mining and construction industries as well as for optimization in mechanical engineering.
In this research, real-time machine operational parameters recorded by EPB TBM and actual geotechnical parameters in an Istanbul-Büyükcekmece Wastewater Tunnel at seven selected tunnel sections were used as input data for the back analysis and assessment method. The method covers excavated materials with: (1) water and (2) soil conditioning chemicals. The influence of water and soil-conditioning chemicals of different proportions on torque, thrust, advance rate of the TBM, and plasticity and consistency indices of the material were investigated. Finally, integrated data were evaluated by multiple linear regression models.

Berrais, Abbes; Pollitt, KieranAn excel based design tool for end plate connections to Eurocode 3Steel Construction4/2014274-279Reports

Kurzfassung

The design of moment-resisting joints can often be a laborious task if performed by manual calculation. This leads to potential rising of unnecessary labour costs when industry approved design tool would otherwise suffice. Steel connection designers are charged with specifying joint components such as plates, welds and bolts required that have structural capacity to transmit the loads which the connection is exposed to. This said connection design and its components need to be economical with regards to cost. However, a balance needs to be reached between the over-design of the connection leading to excessive capacities, and the finite element design that provides the connection with just what it needs to resist such loads.
The aim of this paper is the description of an Excel based tool for the detailed design of bolted end plate connections between beams and columns in accordance to Eurocode 3. The design tool is practical, user friendly with minimum manual input and relatively transparent such that it provides the user with an easy step-by-step guide during the design process.

Kurzfassung

Recently, SBHS (Steels for Bridge High-Performance Structure) has been introduced in Japan because of its remarkable mechanical properties. The main features of SBHS are high yield strength, improved toughness and weldability, which are superior to conventional steel materials at the corresponding tensile strength grades. In this study, these material properties of SBHS were compared with conventional steel materials through experimental studies as well as the Japanese design specifications. The main focus of this paper is the evaluation of the local buckling strength of two SBHS700 stub columns, each with cruciform section through compression tests. The load-displacement relationship, strain bifurcation related to plate buckling and out-of-plane deformation are discussed. Two test specimens with different width-to-thickness ratio parameters RR are compared. As the results indicate, for the specimen having a larger RR, an abrupt decrease in load was observed after the peak load, whereas the decrease in load for the specimen with a smaller RR proceeded gradually after the peak load with a much larger vertical displacement. In terms of local buckling strength, it was found to be possible to evaluate the SBHS700 stub column with cruciform section based on the existing ultimate strength curves.

Kurzfassung

A 6500 m² glazed grid shell dome covers the Nazarbayev Centre in Astana, Kazakhstan. Located near the Presidential Palace, this futuristic building, designed by Foster Partners in London, is one of a whole series of prominent architectural buildings in Astana.
The 20° inclined glass roof spans across various levels of the reinforced concrete structure and slopes down to the north. The dome has a span of over 90 m and a rise of about 11 m. A sufficient in-plane stiffness of the rectangular grid of the dome is achieved by the rigidly connected rectangular hollow sections, which are framed by a strong circumferential edge beam. Connections of the grid and edge beam are bolted mainly as a means to cope with the ambitious time schedule that required fast erection during the strong Kazakh winter. By means of a statically determined support, the roof grid and edge beam of the glazed dome remain largely independent of the concrete structure’s long-term and deformation behavior. A major issue for the roof structure was the verification of global buckling of the dome. In order to minimize tolerances, all connection surfaces of bolt joints were CNC milled. This article summarizes the design philosophy of the dome steel grid and the relationship between glazed dome and main concrete structure.

Debernardi, Pier Giorgio; Taliano, MaurizioAn improvement to Eurocode 2 and fib Model Code 2010 methods for calculating crack width in RC structuresStructural Concrete3/2016365-376Technical Papers

Kurzfassung

The analysis of the mechanical behaviour of a reinforced concrete tie subjected to a monotonic loading in the stabilized cracking stage is performed here by way of a theoretical general model that considers the effect of the so-called Goto cracks (secondary cracks). It is shown, in particular, that the average bond stress along the transmission length depends not only on the concrete strength as assumed by the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010, but also on reinforcement ratio and bar diameter. In this regard, tabulated theoretical values of the average bond stress are proposed as a function of the aforementioned parameters. Moreover, the secondary cracks reduce the effect of tension stiffening on the relative mean strain. On the basis of the main results obtained with the general model, some improvements are suggested for the calculation methods proposed by fib Model Code 2010 and Eurocode 2 concerning the average value of the bond stress and taking into account the influence of the secondary cracks on the mean deformation. An improved calculation method is therefore performed. Finally, the theoretical results of crack spacing and crack width obtained with the general and improved methods are compared with experimental data obtained from extensive research on RC ties.

Kurzfassung

The overall economics of a geothermal project are basically governed by the formation temperature gradient and the productivity of the reservoir. At the Chair of Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Recovery, a simulator has been developed considering different well geometries and casing strings or liner completions as well as total or partial cementation. In order to optimize heat transfer or to minimize losses, various tubing types like gas- or vacuum isolated pipes as well as relined or outside coated pipes can be simulated. The program also allows the simulation of transient states as well as the circulation of various media with various rates in closed systems. This enables the optimisation of energy recovery by simulating various materials and circulation rates over a long term, which is essential for the evaluation of the economical limits and energy efficiency of a geothermal project. The program can also be used for the simulation of oil and gas production since the conservation of energy results in less friction losses and higher flow velocities in gas wells which finally results in better deliquification behaviour.

It is proposed to build concrete bridges with tendons fully encapsulated in plastic ducts and without the use of reinforcing steel. In this case the durability of the proposed bridge depends only on the durability of the concrete because corrosion is no longer a determining factor regarding the lifetime of the structure. The requirements of the serviceability and ultimate limit states are fulfilled by providing post-tensioned tendons with strands fully encapsulated in plastic ducts and watertight anchorages. Since the proposed bridge does not contain any steel, which would be endangered by material-related corrosion, there is no need for insulation to the deck. Consequently, there is also no need for pavement and edge beams. This concept of building bridges represents a breakthrough with regard to sustainability and durability of concrete bridges and is applicable to small and mediumsized bridges. The method has already been implemented for the design of the Egg-Graben Bridge in the Großarl valley in the province of Salzburg, Austria. Prior to the actual construction of the bridge, large-scale tests were performed to obtain practical values for the serviceability, ductility and loadbearing capacity of this structural system.

Kurzfassung

The precast shear wall structure has outstanding features for green buildings due to its construction convenience, safety, high quality and low pollution. In general, precast concrete shear walls are connected by multiple joints. The joint between precast walls has very strong influence on the whole structure, which calls for more detailed investigation. A new kind of connection - the joint connecting beam - was developed to connect the vertical reinforcement in precast concrete shear wall structures. This innovative connecting method has the advantages of convenient operation and saving steel. To evaluate the performance and for better application of the joint connecting beam, an experiment on seven full-scale specimens was conducted under cyclic loading, including two cast-in-situ walls and five precast walls with varying reinforcement and sectional heights of the joint connecting beam. A comparison was performed between cast-in-situ walls and precast walls with joint connecting beam, focusing on failure mode, hysteretic curve, skeleton curve, bearing capacity, ductility and energy-dissipating capacity. The results show that the joint connecting beam can effectively transfer the load of precast walls, especially for squat precast walls. Moreover, finite element models were developed to simulate the performance of the specimens. The simulation results agree well with experimental results.

The ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG operates and maintains 246 tunnels and similar structures with an overall length of approx. 250 km. Nearly 150 of these structures are more than 100 years old, 35 of them are over 150 years old. Ageing processes, the impact of train traffic, ground conditions and environmental conditions are causing progressive damage to the tunnel linings, which - in order to maintain safe railway operation - requires ongoing maintenance procedures. Those procedures are carried out under a range of restrictions concerning availability, which is one of the most important principles at the ÖBB after safety. In order to obtain continuous availability of the facility, new methods of refurbishment were developed for the two double-track tunnels Rekawinkler Tunnel and Kleine Dürreberg. The described methods enabled extensive repair works of the tunnels, mostly with uninterrupted train traffic on the second track.

Tunnel boring machines (TBM) are increasingly used for excavating subsurface infrastructure such as road and railway, water supply and sewer tunnels, to name a few applications. When designing a hard rock TBM drive it is necessary to appreciate all interactions of the rock mass to be tunnelled with the TBM. This paper deals specifically with these interactions and suggests an integrated approach in estimating hard rock TBM performance, such as the penetration rate, the advance rate and the disc cutter wear.

Kurzfassung

This paper introduces a holistic product model for the interactive simulation of shield tunnelling machines. The underlying product model is based on the Building Information Modelling methodology and uses the Industry Foundation Classes to classify and structure the captured data. Data from design, measurements and numerical simulation components obtained from four sub-models (ground, tunnel, tunnel boring machine and building) are stored, classified and organized on commonly available servers. The very heterogeneous data structures found in each individual model are adjusted in advance using georeferencing, transformation or other suitable methods to increase compatibility. In particular, this article describes the methodological design of an interactive product model for mechanized tunnelling in soft soil, including its sub-models. Performance is demonstrated by a case study using data from the Wehrhahn-Line subway construction site in Düsseldorf, Germany. Here, the focus is on the verification of the product model and its use in the numerical simulations. The research presented is a central component of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 837 “Interaction Modelling in Mechanized Tunnelling” at the Ruhr University, Bochum.

Munesi, Ali; Sharbatdar, Mohammadkazem; Gholhaki, MajidAn investigation into the factors influencing the cyclic behaviour of buckling-restrained steel plate shear wallsSteel Construction1/202135-46Articles

Kurzfassung

Steel plate shear walls (SPSW) are being increasingly used in steel or concrete structures as lateral load-resisting systems. Shear buckling is one of the major shortcomings of the SPSW and so to address this issue, buckling-restrained steel plate shear walls (BRSPSW) have started to appear. Owing to the novel concept of this structural system, this paper aims to investigate the effect of factors influencing the response of BRSPSWs. For this purpose, a parametric study was conducted using ABAQUS software. Based on the results acquired from the hysteretic curves, an increase in the concrete compressive strength does not markedly affect the ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Moreover, it was observed that as the width of the gap between concrete panel and steel plate grows, the energy dissipation and response modification factor are reduced. Besides, the results indicate that as steel strength increases, so energy dissipation increases from 0.7 to 11.7 %. Accordingly, based on a comparison between the rate of improvement in shear capacity arising from an increase in the strength of the concrete panels, frame and steel plate, it is concluded that it would be much more rational to increase the concrete strength so that a high shear capacity can be achieved for the BRSPSW. Lastly, in all models, as the gap width increases from 0 to 20 mm and 20 to 35 mm, ductility decreases by 41 and 30 % respectively.

Kurzfassung

The international building sector plays an important role on energy policy and reduction of CO2 emissions. The focus of energy conservation has started from building level and nowadays expands to district, city, region or national level. In this study, an overview, performed within the European project Sinfonia for preparation of a new district tool with focus on energy conservation, will be presented about existing district tools. Several aspects of the tools were included in the overview, such as focus, aim, analytical approach, methodology, geographical coverage, required input data, commercial/freeware, source code, language, tool status, organization/project developing the tool, and web link. The main components of energy district tools such as 3D geographical data, data for building features and properties, and simulation methods were also addressed.
Additionally, the issue of appropriate boundary conditions on urban energy analysis, such as user behaviour, will be discussed. A simulation study of a dwelling in various energy standards including different occupant scenarios was performed, and as a result, a formula was developed to estimate an equivalent heating reference temperature as a function of building envelope, living area, and outdoor temperature. Thus, the estimated equivalent heating reference temperature can be used as input in district energy simulations, instead of a constant set point value independent of the building.
The present study can serve as a basis for new or further development of tools trying to cover the gap and the limits of the existing ones.

Analysis of ASR-induced damage processes in concrete Application of innovative measurement techniques
The alkali-reactive potential of aggregates is assessed according to the German guidelines by two different test methods. These are the 40 °C fog chamber storage and as an alternative method the 60 °C concrete prism test. In both tests, the discontinuously measured expansion of ASR-generating stored concrete prisms is used as criterion for the internal damage process. The damage analysis of the cubes additionally stored in the 40 °C fog chamber is also restricted to the discontinuous measurement of the crack width on the cubes surfaces.
This paper describes an innovative, already successfully applied, non-destructive measurement methodology. This methodology enables a continuous monitoring of the internal damage processes in ASR-generating stored concrete specimens due to a continuous recording of expansion, acoustic emission and ultrasonic velocity. Thereby, three sequent phases of internal structural changes dominated by hydration, crack formation and filling of the cracks with ASR-gel and/or other reaction products can be detected. The crack formation was temporally and spatially visualised by discontinuously applied X-ray computed tomography measurements. Microscopic analyses confirm the findings of the X-ray 3D-CT.

In diesem 1.

Analysis of energy demand and energy consumption of residential buildings with energy certificate in Luxemburg.
Building owners in Luxemburg are obligated by the Energy Savings Ordinance to complete the Energy Performance Certificate of their domestic buildings with measured values of the real energy consumption, for new buildings three years after moving in. Not unexpectedly systematic and considerable discrepancies between the measured delivered energy consumption for heating and domestic hot water and the corresponding standardized calculated demand appeared.
Over time a considerable database arose, allowing for a quantitative statistical analysis of the well-known reasons for these discrepancies between measured consumption and calculated demand. In this first part of the article the method of multiple linear regression is applied, taking various independent variables into account. For future energy performance certificates a probable value of the consumption including a standard error can be estimated from these independent variables and the regression coefficients. A probability that the future consumption will turn out to be in this margin can be calculated and specified in the certificate.
Part 2 of the analysis will concentrate on the influence of usage parameters and error calculus.

Analysis of damage processes in concrete induced by freeze thaw or freeze thaw salt cycles. Application of innovative measurement techniques
CIF- and CDF-test are alternatively applied for the standardized assessment of freeze and freeze de-icing salt resistance of concrete. Up to now the increase of ultrasonic time of flight and mass induced by freeze suction are the only criteria for the assessment of internal damage process. The evaluation of the external damage process is currently realised by visual comparison of test surfaces and the determination of the scaling mass. The significance of these internal and external damage indicators is limited due to the lack of spatially-resolved quantifications of the damage process.
This contribution shows that this disadvantage can be overcome by the application of innovative test methods. In contrast to normative ultrasound test methods, the application of X-ray 3D computed tomography allows a non-destructive temporal and spatial analysis of the internal crack formation process during the CIF-test. For the first time, a spatially-resolved quantification of the scaling of the test surface has been performed by photogrammetry.
