Bridge Design & Engineering
No. 63/2011, page 23
If there was ever a book to remind a bridge engineer of the consequences of an error, or even to give nightmares, this is it […] It is not often that a book can be safely described as a definitive work on a particular subject but in terms of bridge collapses, this accolade is well-deserved. lt is an excellent reference for any individual, company or institution concerned with the design and construction of bridges.

This is a fascinating book. It tackles a complex topic in a most comprehensive manner. Its minor flaws are more than offset by the weight of evidence assembled and should be appreciated by all who need to learn the lessons of history in construction.

I really enjoyed reading this book. […] I recall when I was an undergraduate having to do an assignment about failures of bridges and could only find the Westgate bridge failure report. I spent quite a few weekends trying to understand the report. I only wish I had had a copy of Scheer’s book available, it would have made my life much easier!Davood Liaghat, Technical Director (London office Happold)

I do wonder how the material can be more widely disseminated - the reality is that a very small minority of design engineers read books like this, and an even smaller proportion of the clients and contractors who can play an even larger role in preventing failure. So, if you're in any of these groups, please consider what you're missing! [...]
