Abstract:	Es werden die Materialeigenschaften von Holz als ein biologisches Material, welches im Wald entsteht, beschrieben. Bauholz ist ein nichthomogenes Material, das wachstumsbedingte Fehler in Form von sten, einem nichtparallelen Faserverlauf usw. enthält. Daraus folgend werden die nichthomogenen Eigenschaften, der Einfluß von Fehlern auf die Festigkeitseigenschaften, die Bedeutung der Holzfeuchte und der Festigkeitssortierung sowie die Prinzipien der Dauerhaftigkeit behandelt.
