Load bearing capacity of fillet welded connections of high strength steel.
In recent years a trend towards an increasing number of slim and lightweight steel constructions using high-strength steels can be observed (yield strength ReH > 355 N/mm2). Therefore, modern high-strength steels have been developed, which comprise aside a high strength, good welding characteristics and a high ductility. Despite the good welding characteristics there is a low normative load-bearing capacity of fillet welded joints of high-strength steels. In this article experimental and numerical investigations on the load-bearing capacity of fillet welds are presented. As a result the load bearing capacity of these fillet welded connections is determined. An expanded design model for high-strength steels S460 and S690 is presented, which considers both, the strength of the base and the filler metal.
