Adhesively bonded structural hollow sections in steel constructions.
Up to now, structural hollow sections, in particular tubulars, are connected by welding. However, welded joints are critical with regard to fatigue loads, and represent starting points of cracks that are difficult to monitor. This paper summarizes the findings of the FOSTA research project P 884, which focused on the development of adhesively bonded connections of tubular hollow sections to cast-steel nodes. Particular attention was devoted to consider the particular conditions prevalent in civil engineering. Joints were designed as tubular lap joints. To compensate the hollow structural sections' manufacturing tolerances, adhesive layers of several millimeters in thickness were considered. The outstanding performance of the resulting adhesively bonded joints was proven in a large experimental campaign.
