Title:	Structure as Space - Das Dachtragwerk der TRUMPF Smart Factory in Chicago, USA
Abstract:	Das begehbare Dachtragwerk der TRUMPF Smart Factory in Chicago ist als ‘Structure as Space’ entwickelt. Die Stahlstruktur, in die ein Stegsystem über dem Ausstellungsraum von Werkzeugmaschinen der Firma TRUMPF integriert ist, wurde als Rahmenträger nach dem von Artur Vierendeel Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts eingeführten Konzept entwickelt. Dabei wurde durch eine kraftflussgerechte Formoptimierung und die konsequente Anwendung moderner Analyse- und Fertigungsverfahren das 120 Jahre alte Konstruktionsprinzip als eine effiziente und wirtschaftliche Konstruktionslösung neu interpretiert. Die Smart Factory wurde 2018 mit dem “Preis des Deutschen Stahlbaues” ausgezeichnet. Dieser Artikel erläutert den Entwurfsansatz, die statische Berechnung und die Umsetzung der Dachstruktur. Structure as Space - The roof structure of TRUMPF's Smart Factory in Chicago, USA. The walkable roof structure of the 'TRUMPF Smart Factory' in Chicago is designed as ‘Structure as Space’. The steel structure, incorporating an open skywalk offering an impressive overview of the TRUMPF machinery exhibited within the showroom, was developed as frame-girder following the principle concept introduced by Artur Vierendeel at the end of the 19th century. This 120-year-old design principle was reinterpreted as an efficient and cost-effective design solution by means of a geometry optimization considering size and direction of internal forces and moments as well as consistent application of modern analysis and production methods. The Smart Factory was honoured with the “Preis des Deutschen Stahlbaues”, a prestigious German award given to architectural projects” in 2018. This article explains the design approach, the structural calculation and the implementation of the roof structure.
