Design of hybrid beams and floor slab systems with web openings In high-rise structures and industrial buildings, highly installed steel-concrete composite floor slabs are increasingly being used, in which HVAC installations are mounted through web openings in order to reduce the overall construction height. Regulations for the design of composite beams with web openings are not provided in European standards and existing engineering models from the literature do not entirely cover all relevant structural effects. As a result, the transversal shear capacity of the concrete slab, which accounts for a significant proportion of the total shear capacity in the web opening region, cannot be exploited for the design. This paper presents a model for beams with web openings, which allows a mechanically consistent design under consideration of all possible failure modes. The procedure is also illustrated by means of a detailed application example. |
