Grouted connections in offshore steel structures - research and development at the Institute for Steel Construction, Leibniz University Hannover
For more than 40 years, grouted connections, such as tube-to-tube-connections with cementitious filling material, are used in offshore steel structures like platforms for oil and gas. Since the early days of the offshore wind energy industry, this type of connection has also been used in substructures for offshore wind turbines and platforms. Compared to grouted connections for offshore oil and gas, other filling materials and geometries are used in support structures for offshore wind turbines. Furthermore, load scenarios for offshore wind turbines are completely different. Thus, the Institute for Steel Construction, Leibniz University Hannover is performing research in the fields of grouted connections since 2004. Also in the historical context, this paper reports on selected experiences and results on the load bearing and fatigue behaviour of grouted connections in substructures for the offshore wind industry.
