Abstract: | Herrn Prof. Dr.-Ing. Contribution to the design approach of welds in air-tight box girders under temperature induced internal pressure Air-tight steel box girders have been frequently and successfully used in bridge building during the last years. Only inspection and maintenance of welds and parts inside the box girder proves difficult. This makes a robust design of welds inside necessary. Measurements confirmed that temperature differences lead to substantial changes in inside pressure within an air-tight steel box girder. These pressure differences result in additional, non-negligible - nevertheless so far neglected - increases in loading of welds connecting flanges and webs of box girders. In this contribution we derive a simple design approach for welds in air-tight box girders under shear loading from the main structure as well as bending resulting from temperature induced internal pressure loading. We study the influence of different parameters on the required throat thickness of the welds. Finally, we demonstrate the application of the derived formulation. |
