Abstract:	Nach einem kurzen Rückblick auf die Vorgängerbauwerke der Rheinbrücke Maxau wird das aktuelle Bauwerk eingehend beschrieben. Im Rahmen der Ertüchtigungsplanung war eine Nachrechnung der Brücke gemäß Nachrechnungsrichtlinie durchzuführen. Die Anforderungen, die sich bei der Anwendung eines modernen Regelwerks ergeben, stellen eine große Hürde für den Nachweis bestehender Brücken dar. Durch differenzierte weiterführende Betrachtungen konnten kritische Nachweise erbracht werden. Überlegungen hinsichtlich der Risse in der Fahrbahnkonstruktion führten zur Entscheidung, die Fahrbahn für eine dauerhafte Nutzung zu ertüchtigen. Die Grundgedanken hierzu werden aufgeführt. Eingehend wird die Ertüchtigung der Fahrbahn in einem folgenden zweiten Teil beschrieben. Reinforcement of the Rhein bridge Maxau After a short review of the predecessing bridges, the actual Rhein-bridge Maxau is described in detail. For the reinforcement of the bridge, it was necessary to carry out a calculation on basis of the Nachrechnungsrichtlinie. The difficulties, connected with this proceeding, could be solved with divergent approaches. The reinforcement of the orthotropic plate will be fully described in part 2.
