Investigations on micro-damage in mild steel using ESPI An approach on investigating the highly localized micro damage phenomena during crack initiation under cyclic loading of mild steel is proposed. For this purpose, notched specimens are subjected to stresses in the high-cycle fatigue (HCF) regime. The specimen surface near the notch is inspected using electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI), a technique for high-resolution and full field strain measurement. This is done at discrete intervals of a few thousand load cycles. The evaluation of measurement data showed strain-localization as well as progressive strain-accumulation with increasing number of load cycles. The results presented were the result of an ongoing research project of the Graduiertenkolleg 2075 “Modelling the constitutive evolution of building materials and structures with respect to aging”. Its goal is to describe and evaluate the constitutional change of structures and materials under mechanical loading and chemical attack with respect to different spatial and temporal scales. |
