Title: | Hierarchical Model Predictive Control for complex building energy systems |
Abstract: | In this paper, a hierarchical Modelica-based Model Predictive Control (MPC) is presented in order to control complex building energy systems with different dynamics. The hierarchical MPC concept tackles the problem of controlling buildings with both slow dynamics such as in thermally activated building systems (TABS) and fast dynamics such as in air handling units (AHUs). It addresses prediction errors of system disturbances (e.g. weather, occupancy) and ensures anticipation, reactivity and real-time capability. Further, the concept allows for considering both thermal and visual comfort by integrating a norm-based Venetian blind model. It calculates the transmission of total energy and light for direct and diffuse solar radiation based on the controlled inclination angle and vertical position of the slats. The benefits compared to single MPC, Rule-Based-Control (RBC) and Proportional-Integrative-Derivative (PID) strategies are demonstrated in simulations on a nonlinear Modelica model. |
