Ultimate load analyses in the framework of a robustness assessment of existing hydraulic steel structures In context with the planning of maintenance measures on structures of the Federal Waterways, the publication BAWMerkblatt “Bewertung der Tragfähigkeit bestehender Verschlüsse im Stahlwasserbau (TbVS)” offers a procedure that uses a robustness assessment to provide information on the structural safety and the load-bearing behaviour of damaged hydraulic steel structures. The key figure of the robustness assessment is the ultimate load of the structure. The article presents the numerical analysis procedure within the framework of the robustness assessment that is used to calculate the ultimate load for the common structural systems of steel weir gates. After an introduction about the necessity of robustness assessments for the existing closing devices used in the German federal waterways and the explanation of the underlying safety concept, the analysis procedure for the numerical determination of the ultimate load is described. The degree of damage D is introduced to quantify the outcome of the robustness assessment. Three examples of different structural systems then illustrate the step-by-step procedure for the determination of the ultimate load and the calculation of the degree of damage. The final summary shows the importance of the procedure for maintenance planning across multiple structures. |
