Vicente, Bruno Andrés | Arroyo Vega flood relief tunnel design | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 2/2023 | 175-183 | Topics |
KurzfassungThis article aims to present structural and geotechnical design challenges of the flood relief project “Segundo Emisario del Arroyo Vega”, part of Buenos Aires city hydraulic master plan. Works comprised the execution of an 8.4 km-long tunnel for relief of the existing sewer network. Tunnel alignment develops in a highly populated area, with important interferences such as two metro lines, three railway lines and a main potable water tunnel. All tunnel sections extend mostly within firm, silty soils. Overburden varies between 15 and 25 m. The downstream section was executed with a 6.1 m-diameter Earth pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPB TBM) launched from a 35 m-diameter shaft with water table pressures up to 200 kPa. Break-in was performed across a watertight, plastic diaphragm wall cell, which allowed safe shaft wall manual demolition, resulting in a very safe TBM launch. The tunnel upstream section, 2.85 m in diameter, was executed using pipe jacking technology, with the peculiarity of using bidirectional launch shafts along its alignment. To allow water entrance from existing system - through flow diversion chambers - into the new relief tunnel, openings were made in the TBM tunnel, with connection areas of 4 to 7 m2. Its design was particularly challenging, given that unbolted segmental lining was used. x

Klösges, Simon; Müller, Michael | Artificial ground freezing as a consolidation measure for tunnelling under Bern main station / Erstellung eines Gefrierkörpers als Bauhilfsmaßnahme für einen Tunnelvortrieb unter dem Hauptbahnhof Bern | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2021 | 441-447 | Topics |
KurzfassungIn the course of the planned underground extension of the central station in Bern, an access tunnel had to be constructed from an existing shaft. The first 60 m of this tunnel cross through unstable, water-bearing and unconsolidated rock, and run under existing railway tracks. Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH has been commissioned the contract to carry out an artificial ground freezing measure to enhance the realization of the tunnel construction. The horizontal directional drilling work within the shaft as well as the construction and operation of the freezing plant were carried out in 2020 in a very confined space, and parallel to the ongoing operation of the train station. In order to ensure sufficient water saturation and thus the freezability of the unconsolidated rock, artificial ground irrigation procedure was operated. After completion of the predefined frost body, the tunnel was successfully and safely driven from the shaft into the bedrock. x

Marinitsch, S.; Sischka, J. | Ascot Racecourse - Architektur trifft Tradition | Stahlbau | 10/2007 | 682-687 | Fachthemen |

Gokce, Hasan Burak; Demir, Korhan; Bakir, Ayd?n; Aribilginc, Tamer; Arioglu, Ergin | Asia Transition Box and Conventionally Excavated Twin Tunnels for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 4/2016 | 310-316 | Topics |
KurzfassungThe 14.6 km long Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project is a safe, quick and environmentally responsible alternative road link between Asia and Europe, as such it is being constructed under a Build-Operate-Transfer contract by a public-private partnership. The investor/contractor has committed to build the Project in 55 months and to operate the facility for a concession period of approximately 25 years. This article examines the project's two critical structures located in the Asian side of Istanbul, considering site investigation, construction and monitoring. The first structure is a cut and cover construction next to the Bosphorus, called the Asia Transition Box (ATB), which enabled the launching of the TBM and conventional tunnels. The second is the conventionally excavated twin tunnels (CETT), which pass under a highly urbanized part of Istanbul and provide the transition from the highway into the tunnel under the Bosphorus. x
