Mahler, András; Móczár, BalázsStrength and deformation characteristics of tertiary soils / Scherfestigkeits- und Verformungsverhalten von tertiären BödenGeomechanics and Tunnelling4/2019352-361Topics

Kurzfassung

This article presents the results of in-situ and triaxial testing of tertiary soils (Pannonian sand and Oligocene clay) performed for two major Hungarian projects. The shear strength of these formations varies greatly. Just interpreting the shear strength of tertiary soils poses a number of questions, which definitely exceeds the scope of existing standards. Since extracting multiple samples from the overconsolidated, high-density samples was not possible, the necessary parameters had to be determined from one larger specimen. Through short examples, it is demonstrated how the test results can be described using soil models and transferred into geotechnical design, highlighting the limits of numerical modelling (in case of these soils).

Spagnoli, Giovanni; Feinendegen, Martin; Ziegler, MartinAssessing the clogging potential of clay/additive / mixtures by cone pull-out testsGeomechanics and Tunnelling4/2019362-371Topics

Kurzfassung

Clogging can be a massive problem during the mechanized excavation of tunnels. Soil conditioning with foams and/or polymers is normally used in these cases to decrease the adverse effect of clogging. In a research project the cone pull-out test was used to assess the variation of adherence for four sticky clays with four commercial additives. Results show that the additives have also an impact on the basic mechanical properties of the clays such as liquid limit, plasticity index and shrinkage limit. The tests were performed on the one hand by spraying the additives on the metal surface of the cone and on the other hand by directly mixing them to the clays to reach the critical consistency index (i.e. where the maximum adherence with water was observed). Sprayed cone tests show for two clays a decrease in adherence. However, by directly mixing the additives to the clay, adherence considerably decreases, except for one kaolinitic clay. The results can be useful to select suitable additives or to develop new ones considering the geotechnical and mineralogical properties of the excavated clays.

Kurzfassung

Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines are shield machines that rely on their own excavated material as a support medium to maintain the support pressure at the face. This material also needs to have the necessary properties to be extracted, transported and, finally, disposed of. Whenever the natural material does not fulfil the necessary requirements, additives like water, foam, polymers, and fines, must be added, modifying the excavated ground to the desired conditions. The rheological properties of any excavated material, together with any additives, must be investigated and understood, as they will influence the flow behaviour of this conditioned material, directly affecting the machine operation and tunnel logistics. While studies assessing the flowability related to the EPB excavation of sand or clay soils are available, there is a lack of information on mixed soils. This paper presents the results from a testing campaign with mixed clay-sand samples, aiming to reproduce a simplified tropical weathered mixed soil, investigating its flow behaviour when changing certain controlled variables: clay-sand proportions, clay mineral, size of the clastic grain mixed with clay, water content, and additives (foam and polymers). Results from the tests conducted with a flow table, a slump test, and a rheometer device were compared, providing insights about the flow behaviour of the tested samples and its interaction with an EPB machine.

Numerical simulation of passive earth pressure in sand and comparison with measurements in model tests.
In the paper a finite-element-model is presented, adjusted by Hegert [1] to Bartl's model test device and verified in detail by the comparison of the coefficients of mobilised earth pressure, displacements in the limit state, surface displacements, local coefficients of earth pressure and the point of application of the resultant earth pressure. The measurements can be well simulated in consideration of the possibilities and limitations of the hardening soil model. It can be shown, that the approach of DIN 4085 for the coefficient of active and passive earth pressure and the mobilisation functions of Bartl, Besler and Vogt are good approximations. Particularly it could be verified that the coefficients of earth pressure proposed by Pregl [4] and Sokolowski [5] are a good approach for parallel wall movement and that the reduction factors for rotation about the top and rotation about the foot of the wall, proposed in DIN 4085, give realistic results.

Huber, Stefan; Henzinger, Christoph; Heyer, DirkCompaction control of secondary materials used in earthworksgeotechnik4/2019199-211Fachthemen

Kurzfassung

Compaction control is a fundamental part of quality assurance for earthworks and essential to ensuring the long-term stability and serviceability of earth structures. As the testing of relative compaction for coarse-grained materials is time-consuming, plate load tests are typically used for this purpose. Practical experience shows that the compaction control of secondary materials using plate load tests is not as straightforward as suggested in earthwork specifications. Unfortunately, these subtleties are not widely known and typically lead to rejection of the compacted layers, despite the material having been compacted thoroughly. This paper summarizes the findings of compaction field tests on several secondary materials that were field-compacted to varying dry densities. Field testing of the compacted layers included the determination of dry density and plate load tests (static and dynamic). The results of these field tests are presented and discussed here and show that the parameters provided by plate load tests do not relate to the dry densities of the materials tested in the same way as they do for natural materials. Suggestions are provided concerning the most viable way of conducting compaction control of secondary materials within the earthwork specifications of Germany and Austria.

Barka, Elissavet; Birle, Emanuel; Demond, DerikGeotechnische Untersuchungen an modifizierten Stahlwerksschlackengeotechnik4/2019212-218Fachthemen

Geotechnical investigations on modified steel slags.
Extensive experimental investigations have shown that the water permeability of steel slags can be reduced by the addition of fine-grained additives, such that they can be used as additional sealing layer, in accordance with the technical recommendations for the use of soils and building materials with environmentally relevant substances in earthworks (M TS E). The experimental investigations were carried out on three steel slags which were granulometrically modified using four fine-grained additives. The results of the water permeability tests show that the coefficient of permeability kf < 1 · 10-8 m/s can already be achieved with an addition of 8 wt.% fine-grained additives. In comparison to natural soils, it should be noted that steel slags generally require a higher compaction energy (modified proctor energy) to achieve a low air void ratio with accompanying additional reduction of their water permeability and that the swelling capacity of sodium-activated bentonite can be reduced due to the high ion concentration in the pore solution.

Tamping process in railway engineering Mechanical model of the tamping unit-ballast matrix interaction.
Condition of the ballast bed is one of the most important parameters for safe and economical operation of railway systems. In order to define the optimum time for ballast bed cleaning or renewal as well as to improve ballast serviceability and track life cycle performance, better knowledge of the ballast bed condition, i.e. definition of the degree of ballast fouling is of crucial importance. As a core maintenance activity in ballasted track, the tamping process influences the economical service life of the track to a great extent and is essential in restoring the track geometry for safe train operations. During the tamping process, the tamping tines interact with the ballast matrix, transferring the displacement caused by the dynamic excitation overlapped with the extension in the hydraulic cylinder to the ballast, compacting it under the sleeper. This interaction is observed and measured in-situ in several locations in Austria. Serving as a mean of comparison and confirmation with the conducted in-situ measurements, a semi-analytical model of the tamping unit - ballast matrix interaction has been developed. Conclusions regarding the differences in response and resistance to compaction of both new and fouled ballast material are made and presented in this paper.

Polygonal brick facade decorates building complex in the Swiss Riehen. Despite the meanwhile more than 21, 000 inhabitants, Riehen could preserve its former village character. A residential complex with three apartment buildings developed in the passage from the houses in the village centre lying close to each other to the loosely built living quarters at the village border. The new buildings with three full storeys and each with a circumferentially recessed attic floor host overall 29 condominiums with flexible floor plans. All apartments are designed age appropriately and barrier free. The polygonal building structures break the block-edge and stand in a park-like designed environment like clods.
