KurzfassungThe joint venture Austrian Tunnel Consortium Stuttgart 21 is constructing the Filder Tunnel with a length of 9.4 km and the Ober- and Untertürkheim Tunnel with a length of 6 km as part of the Stuttgart 21 project. The tunnel Ober- and Untertürkheim as well as the middle sections of the Filder Tunnel, which are located in difficult ground conditions, were driven conventionally. The tunnelling work was carried out under the protection of the AT - Pipe Umbrella System. (photo: DSI Underground) x

KurzfassungThe new Nikachhu hydropower station in Bhutan has an installed capacity of 118 MW and is supplied with 25.45 m3/s via a 12,144 m long, 4 m diameter head race tunnel. Extensive tunnelling works were required for the project. In addition to a diversion tunnel, two adits were built near the dam to be able to access the desilting chambers. Five additional adits had to be built for the head race tunnel, and three adits, a ventilation tunnel, and a main access tunnel were required in the powerhouse. DSI Underground supplied Mai grout-mixing pumps and DSI Hollow Bar Spiles type R32 and T76 for this tunnel project. (photo: DSI Underground) x

Logistical challenges at the construction of long tunnels | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 3/2021 | Cover Pictures
KurzfassungRing line no.15 is one of four new metro lines of the Grand Paris Express mega-project. The construction lot T2C in the southeast of Paris with a length of approx. 7 km is a key part of the new line. It consists of a 4.7 km long tunnel between Noisy-Champs and Champigny, a 2.2 km long bypass tunnel with a maintenance station, a large-scale underground junction cavern, and intermediate access shafts. Difficult ground conditions, limited space for construction, and the requirement for minimization of settlements in an urban environment determine the ground control systems for this tunnel project. Among others, the AT - 139 pipe umbrella system with press connection and a wall thickness of 8 mm, foot piles from the DSI hollow bar system as well as GRP face anchors were used. KurzfassungFrom the excavation pit of the future Sydney Metro Pitt Street station, a connecting tunnel had to be constructed underneath a busy road. To secure the station box wall, the AT - Pipe Umbrella System was used, which was installed at a 19° downwards. In close cooperation with the drilling equipment specialist Robodrill, DSI Underground has developed a successful concept for the installation of the AT - Pipe Umbrella System consisting of 60 individual pipes with a length of 18 meters each. For this project, DSI Underground's proprietary squeezed connection for pipe umbrella pipes has been used as a replacement for a conventional threaded connection. (photo: DSI Underground) x

KurzfassungThe Pflaurenz Tunnel, which is roughly 1 km long, is being built to provide a bypass which relieves pressure on the St. Lorenzen municipality in South Tirol. Half of the tunnel (approx. 417 m) passes through loose rock and was driven by excavators. To provide advance support, the innovative AT - Pipe Umbrella System with 139 [mm] squeezed connection developed by DSI Underground was successfully used in the loose rock sections of the Pflaurenz Tunnel to quickly and safely connect the tubes when driving the tunnel. KurzfassungThe 25 km long Thames Tideway Tunnel, with an internal diameter of 7.2 m, is a large wastewater interceptor and storage tunnel designed to prevent several million cubic metres of untreated wastewater from spilling into the Thames each year. Access to the tunnel, which is driven at depths of between 30 and 60 metres, is via deep shafts and access tunnels. For the access shaft on the Victoria Embankment construction site, the AT - Pipe Umbrella System with innovative squeezed connection was used to secure an access tunnel at the base of the shaft (see page 665). KurzfassungWith the Fruta del Norte mine in Ecuador, Lundin Gold Inc. of Canada is mining one of the highest-grade gold mines in the world currently in production. Immediately after the mine was developed, mining of the ore started in the fourth quarter of 2019. The development tunnels were excavated conventionally and passed through difficult geological conditions. DSI Underground supplied all support equipment such as lattice girders, rock bolts, resin cartridges and support mats to secure the driving of the access tunnels. KurzfassungFor the expansion of the world's largest copper ore mine El Teniente in Chile, two new access tunnels with a diameter of 8 m and a length of about 9 km will be built and the underground network will be extended by 21 km. To secure the tunnels, DSI Underground Chile supplied, among other things, a special anchoring system providing protection against rock outburst (see page 431). (Photo: DSI Underground) x

KurzfassungThe Tren Interurbano rail connection between Toluca and Mexico City includes a 4.7 km long twin-bore tunnel, which was driven by two multi-mode TBMs in heterogeneous geology. During construction of a cross passage between the two parallel tubes, water broke in several times. The section could finally be supported using a combined polyurethane and silicate resin grouting system to fill cavities and seal against water pressure (photo: DSI Underground) (see page 339). x |
