KurzfassungSteel and composite bridges offer economic advantages, even for short and medium spans. To simplify and speed up the design process, ArcelorMittal now offers Advance Bridge Expert, a free preliminary design software that includes complex geometries and innovative solutions. The software is suitable for the pre-dimensioning of curved and/or skewed composite road, railway and pedestrian bridges according to the Eurocodes and several National Annexes. It supports the predesign of steel composite bridges, filler beam bridges and PreCoBeam/composite dowel strips using the hot-rolled section and modern steel grades libraries of ArcelorMittal up to S460, including HISTAR® grades and weathering steel (Arcorox®) according to EN 10025-5:2019. x

KurzfassungAs part of the AiF-FOSTA research project P1020 “Economical welded joints of high-strength steels”, extensive tests were carried out at the Institute of Steel and Timber Construction at the TU Dresden. Tested were lap joints, cruciform joints and butt joints of steels in grades S500 to S960. The picture shows the flat tensile test specimens made from butt joints with a thickness of 20 mm and a width of 35 mm in the weld area to be tested. Fully and partially penetrated butt welds were tested. In order to determine the strains in the course of the tests, strain measurements were carried out using photogrammetry in addition to inductive measurements. For this purpose, a stochastic pattern of graphite spray was applied to the test specimens and the high-frequency image recordings were digitally evaluated (s. article pp. 138-149. KurzfassungThe 277 m high Baku Tower in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is the tallest building in the Caucasus ever built. The tower is constantly subjected to enormous wind loads, that gave the city's name it's meaning “city of wind”. To cope with these wind loads a 400 t pendulum damper was installed on the tower's uppermost platform. Its special feature: in case of strong wind and earthquake, the 400 t mass block moves horizontally by up to 1.3 m in all directions in a controlled manner. This pendulum damper reduces the strain on the structure, thus it ensures the building's living and working comfort. The mass block consists of a massive steel box that was filled with concrete on site. MAURER not only manufactured the steel construction but also supervised the entire assembly and put the vibration damper into operation. (© Maurer SE) x

KurzfassungIn 2002, construction work for the largest combined railroad/road bridge in India started. The Bogibeel Bridge owes its name to a secluded village in the tri-border region of India, Myanmar, and the PR China, where the Brahmaputra leaves the Himalaya. MAURER supplied 164 spherical bearings to be placed between the bridge deck and the piers. The bearing specialists from Munich were awarded the contract because they succeeded in designing bearings capable of transmitting the extreme structural loads of 2,800 t, yet fitting into the confined space on the piers. KurzfassungMOCAPE in Shenzhen/China, housing the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Planning Exhibition (PE) is a vast building consisting of many long-span structural elements. The transparent façade highlights the main entrance and circulation zone between the two buildings and allows unobstructed views between the inside and outside. The open, column-free exhibition areas with heights from 6 to 17 m also strengthen the impression of a generous design concept. x
