Kurzfassung

Dubai Municipality awarded to Porr Besix JV the Project for the Main Tunnel component of the Deep Storm Water System. The tunnel will collect both rainwater and groundwater from approximately 500 sq. km and transfer the captured flow to the sea. The Design Builder JV selected COWI as Designer of the entire Project and IC Consultant as Design Checker for the Tunnels. The Project includes approximately 10.3 km of 10-meter-inside diameter tunnel in rock, three construction shafts and one drop shaft. The main tunnel will convey stormwater and groundwater flows from the EXPO 2020 area near the intersection of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Jebal Ali Lehbab Road to the sea close to the EGA facility. The tunnel will follow beneath the road easement along Jebal Ali Lehbab Road and along Sheikh Zayed Road and continue to the pumping station. The tunnel traversed through the Barzaman and Fars formation with an overburden of 33 m with maximum water pressure of 4.4 bar and was excavated by EPB TBMs. This project is characterized by its dimensions with an internal diameter of 10 m and 350 mm of segment thickness, and by the use of steel fibre reinforced concrete in the precast segmental lining. The use of fibres aims to reduce the CO2 footprint obtaining an optimized design from the environmental point of view. These facts are associated to a complex design of precast segments, in order to ensure their structural competence and their integrity according to the durability requirements, under large thrust forces (temporary loads) and permanent load. Hence, considering such complexities, the structural design has been carried out producing a 3D structural model by means of a sophisticated FEM structural software. Results of the model allow to identify areas of the segment where spalling and bursting stresses are generated along circumferential joints and maximum value of those stresses in the temporary load cases. Moreover, a structural design verification of the segment has been undertaken considering the contribution of steel fibres class 4c, as it is set up in the FIB model code, aiming to ensure that the precast segments are structurally competent and fulfil the durability requirements of the Project. The article details the design approach and the independent checker design verification approach. The experience gained during construction is also reported, describing challenging aspects of the Tunnel execution and an analysis of the lining damages.

Sound field simulation by image sources - A design tool for anechoic rooms.
Conventional designs of anechoic rooms according to ISO 3745 often bear risks since the usual assumption of an absorption coefficient at normal incidence of 99 % of traditional fibrous or porous claddings may be not necessary in one case but insufficient in another. A simulation program is presented which is based on the wave interferences of the sound from a real point source and a number of image sources which replace imperfectly absorbing bounding surfaces. Its application demonstrates various effects which can influence the free-field characteristics to the same extent as the absorption of the cladding. By this one may gain more confidence - at an early stage of the planning process - in the quality of an acoustic test facility for the determination of sound power, spectrum and directivity of technical sound sources.

Zhang, Boshan; Chen, Weizhen; Xu, JunShear behaviour of girders with trapezoidal corrugated steel webs - an experimental studyStahlbau8/2018810-819Fachthemen

Kurzfassung

Presently, numerical analysis of the finite element method and small-scale tests are commonly adopted in researches on the shear behaviour of girders with corrugated steel webs, but these two methods are unable to deal well with the effects of construction flaws in actual structures. Besides, in the case of girders with trapezoidal corrugated webs, most studies took steel I-shaped specimens with vertical webs and thin flanges as research objects, and these cannot represent girders with inclined webs or composite flanges. Therefore, a full-scale corrugated steel web girder with inclined flanges was tested. The failure mode and shear strength of the girder were investigated. The results show that the shear resistance of flanges should not be ignored. Out-of-plane deformation develops in the web from the start of loading owing to initial geometric imperfections, and buckling failure occurs in areas where out-of-plane deformation develops fastest.

Zhang, Boshan; Chen, Weizhen; Xu, JunLoad effect and fatigue damage of bridges under combined actions of traffic and wind: a case studyStahlbau4/2016281-291Fachthemen

Kurzfassung

Study of load effects on bridges with large windward sides has to consider not only passing vehicles but also wind actions. This paper concerns the method to calculate actual load effect and fatigue damage under combined actions of traffic and wind, taking one of the steel rods of Anyang Bridge as an example project. Firstly, internal force time-history of the rod was simulated based on measured data of traffic load and wind field. Then, extreme values of internal force of the rod were extrapolated using an improved method based on level crossing, and stress spectra of three fatigue-prone details on the rod were gained using the rain-flow method. Finally, the rod was checked under ultimate limit state and fatigue limit state, respectively. It was found that characteristic values of internal force of the rod under combined actions of traffic and wind increased from +5 849/-4 063 kN (considering vehicle actions alone) to +6 350/-5 466 kN and the maximum damage degree of fatigue-prone details increased from 0.61 (considering vehicle actions alone) to 0.63. These results suggest that wind load contributes a significant increase to internal force characteristic values of the rod but a small increase to fatigue damage. However, high stress amplitudes due to wind load do not allow infinite life design. The actual load level is much higher than that prescribed in the design code. Hence, wind actions should be fully considered.

Zhang, Chun-LiangDeformation of clay rock under THM conditionsGeomechanics and Tunnelling5/2015426-435Topics

Kurzfassung

As a potential host rock for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste, the Callovo-Oxfordian and Opalinus clay rocks have been extensively investigated in the laboratory with respect to deformation under various thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions: (1) stresses covering the range from the initial lithostatic state to redistributed levels after excavation, (2) humidity variations representing ventilation during operation of tunnels as well as water migration from the far-field and (3) heating from ambient temperature up to 100 °C and a subsequent cooling phase. For these highly consolidated clay rocks, a new concept is theoretically derived to explain the effective stress in the particle matrix and experimentally confirmed. The mechanical deformation of the clay rocks is determined by means of short- and long-term compression experiments on quasi water-saturated samples at ambient temperature. Reponses of the clay rocks to humidity changes are examined by drying and wetting the samples under different loading conditions. Thermal effects are studied by heating and cooling the stressed samples under drained and undrained conditions. The main findings are presented and discussed in this paper.

Zhang, WeiExperimental study on fatigue behaviour of CFRP plates externally bonded to concrete substrateStructural Concrete2/2016235-244Technical Papers

Kurzfassung

The behaviour of the bond between fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) and concrete greatly influences the behaviour of concrete structures strengthened with FRP composites. Although numerous experimental studies have investigated this bond, experimental data concerning fatigue tests on carbon FRP plates attached to concrete blocks are still lacking. Therefore, a series of double-lap shear tests under monotonic and fatigue loadings were performed on concrete prismatic specimens reinforced with CFRP plates. First, a series of experimental investigations are summarized. Thereafter, the fatigue behaviour of CFRP plate debonding is characterized using S-N diagrams that represent the relationship of the upper-limit fatigue load with the monotonic load strength and the number of cycles to debonding on a semi-logarithmic scale.

Zhang, Wei; Wu, Mengxue; Zhu, JinEvaluation of vehicular dynamic effects for the life cycle fatigue design of short-span bridgesSteel Construction1/201737-46Articles

Kurzfassung

Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Akimitsu Kurita on his 70th birthday
In current bridge design codes or specifications, the dynamic effects of vehicles are considered by using a dynamic amplification factor (DAF) or dynamic load allowance (IM). However, a DAF is defined based on the ratio of the maximum dynamic load responses to the static load responses, and it is more appropriate for maximum value-based strength design. For fatigue design, stress cycles other than the maximum stress ranges could contribute to fatigue damage accumulations. Meanwhile, on the capacity side, a reduction in fatigue strength due to structural deterioration, which is related to local environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, etc., could introduce more uncertainties into structural safety and reliability evaluation. However, such multiple stress range effects and structural deterioration are not included in current bridge fatigue design. To evaluate the vehicular dynamic effects for the life cycle fatigue design of short-span bridges, the present study proposes a new dynamic amplification factor for life cycle bridge fatigue design (DALC), which is defined as the ratio of the life cycle nominal live load stress range to the maximum static stress range. In contrast to other traditionally defined dynamic factors, the newly defined DALC includes information about both the structural loading and the structural capacity. Therefore, the multiple stress cycles from vehicle-induced vibrations and the structural deteriorations from road surface conditions and corrosion of structural members are included. Parametric studies of DALC were carried out for multiple parameters and variables in the bridge's design life cycle, for instance, possible faulting days in each year, fatigue strength exponent, corrosion parameters and corrosion level. The stochastic properties and uncertainties from these variables are also considered in the DALC calculation.

Kurzfassung

Cold-formed steel sections are widely used in many applications such as structural frames, scaffolding systems, purlins and storage racks. In particular, cold-formed steel portal frames can be an alternative to conventional hot-rolled steel portal frames for industrial, rural and residential low rise buildings. The advantages of using cold-formed steels include a higher strength-to-weight ratio and reduced material, erection and transportation costs.
Over the past two decades a number of researchers [1] to [3] have undertaken tests on cold-formed steel portal frames. The tests mainly focused on the behaviour of joints, and employed relatively stocky sections. Hence, they provided little insight into the effects of cross-sectional instability on the overall stability of the frame.
In this paper, three portal frame tests are described, the main purpose of which was to study the effect of cross-sectional instability on the two-dimensional sway failure of cold-formed steel. The tests demonstrated significant local and distortional buckling before reaching the ultimate load. Finite element models were calibrated against the tests. The calibrated models therefore can be used for a parametric study to investigate the significance of the additional second-order effects caused by local/distortional bucking. The paper details the tests and the numerical simulations.

Kurzfassung

Sinusoidal corrugated profile webs have been popularly used in steel structural designs to replace the flat webs in conventional welded beams, while there are better performances in corrugated web beams (CWBs) regarding more stability and less material used to against beam failures caused by buckling. Previous studies have provided that CWBs enabled numerous favourable benefits to be recognised as alternatives to the traditional weld beams in designing structures. Furthermore, as CWBs are proposed as the major load-carrying elements, the maximum deflection in the elastic range is one of the important beam properties that should be precisely estimated and calculated. To find an appropriate method in computing the maximum deflection of CWBs based on the first yield for civil communities in Australia, proposed equations based on other standards will be employed to calculate the theoretical results for the comparisons with simulation-based results. While applying the linear analysis simulations provided by SAP 2000, ultimate limit state design theory has also been used with requirements stated by AS 4100. In this study, the results in theoretical calculations and numerical simulations have been compared to conclude that the highly defined equations by ASTM [37] and Sause et al. [38] could precisely estimate the maximum deflections of CWBs based on the first yield in conjunction with requirements and limitations in Australian standards, which could be adequate for the structural design calculations in Australian design fields.

Investigation of the natural ventilation in traditional buildings:
Traditional buildings are characterised by the integration of construction requirements and socio-cultural needs of one society. The use of natural resources such as wind for cooling and ventilation provides a remarkable example of such building designs. In this paper, existing analytical and numerical methods investigating the natural ventilation in buildings are introduced and discussed. Weaknesses of common analytical methods, such as envelope flow models for buildings with large openings, are demonstrated. These methods are not suitable for complex building structures. As a result, other methods like CFD-Simulation should be applied. Validations are carried out based on existing experimental measurements consequently. It turns out that the CFD-simulation can produce very good results and can predict the wind flow behavior and buoyancy effect very accurately to certain degree in investigated cases. Furthermore, one application example for further use of CFD in building with wind catcher is presented and discussed. This should serve as the basis for further investigations of natural ventilation for climate and culture adapted constructions.

Kurzfassung

The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of pre- and post-jacketing corrosion and loading damage on concrete-jacketed reinforced concrete (RC) columns under uniaxial loading and to develop a methodology for predicting the corresponding compressive strength. The pre- and post-damage involved preloading up to 50 % of the peak load of the core column, an electrochemical process to accelerate the migration of chlorides from an external electrolyte into the test columns and a wetting-drying cycle process with a controlled current to speed up the corrosion of the steel reinforcing bars in the test columns. Uniaxial loading tests were performed to determine the structural performance of the concrete-jacketed columns with and without corrosion damage. The failure mode and load-displacement and load-strain responses of the test columns were recorded, and the related mechanisms are discussed. A model capable of evaluating the compressive strength of unjacketed or jacketed RC columns with and without corrosion damage was then developed. The analytical approach considered the effect of reinforcement corrosion on the effective loadbearing area of the concrete and the confinement effect of the stirrups. The analytical results agree well with the experimental results, indicating the reliability and effectiveness of the models developed.

Kurzfassung

Long-span cable-stayed bridges often have multiple supports separated by certain distances. If a long-span bridge is located in a complex terrain with different local soil conditions, the spatial variability may result in quantitative and qualitative differences in seismic responses compared with those produced by synchronous motion at all supports. To conduct such a multi-support excitation analysis of a long-span bridge, the ground motion excitations at different supports of the bridge are traditionally reproduced using the unconditional simulation technique, which cannot reflect the realistic propagation of ground motions at the site where the bridge is located. In addition, the finite element model of a cable-stayed bridge cannot be calibrated before conducting the seismic analysis. Heretofore the difference in seismic responses between the FE model and an alternative model has not been investigated systematically. Furthermore, seismic response analyses of long-span bridges using in situ ground motions are very rare.
Therefore, this paper proposes an analytical approach for conducting the seismic response analysis of a long-span cable-stayed bridge subjected to non-uniform ground motions based on the updated FE model with the aid of a bridge structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The model updating approach is developed on the basis of the static and dynamic sensitivity analyses in order to establish the SHM-oriented model. The excitations at all the supports of the bridge undergo conditional simulation based on the measured ground motions at limited points.
A real long-span cable-stayed bridge is taken as an example to examine the feasibility and validity of the proposed approach. The observations made indicate that the seismic responses based on the SHM-oriented model are different to those based on the original FE model. The non-uniform seismic responses are substantially different from those of the uniform seismic responses.

Contribution to the calculation of composite beams with elastic composite action.
Methods of Calculations according to the exact equations for rigid and elastic composite action as well as without composite action are discussed. The application of closed solutions is essential for the calculation of the elastic composite action. Some closed solutions for the normal force and the deflection are given. Applications of the introduced composite factor and the spring models behind it are shown. Finally, an approximation method is developed from an extended spring model and the composite factor. The results of model calculations, which were carried out by both methods, show a good agreement.

Decreasing frost heaves of artificial frozen soils by intermission freezing.
For decreasing the frost heaves of artificially frozen soils the influences of temperature gradient, its changes as well as the amplitude and period of changing freezing temperature on the one-dimensional frost heaves of fine-grained soils were investigated by experiments in the laboratory. During the frost penetration into the fine-grained soils the frost heaves due to the formation of the final ice lens under thermodynamic stationary condition is decisive. The gradient of temperature influences strongly the depth of frost penetration but only little the total frost heave. Cyclical changes of the freezing temperature can confine the growth of the final ice lens and thereby the frost heave decreases. However, the cyclical changes of the freezing temperature before the formation of the final ice lens can cause a heavy frost heave. For decreasing frost heaves the amplitude und period of changing the freezing temperature must be controlled properly.

Kurzfassung

Strut-and-tie models (STMs) have been wildly used for the design of disturbed regions in structural concrete members. The STM developed based on the load path method or with the aid of stress trajectories is not unique and varies with the designer's intuition and past experience. As a result, topology optimization methods have been adopted to generate STMs in reinforced concrete structures. However, such models are just a preliminary configuration and the detailed layout of ties in an STM cannot be determined by the optimal topology. This is because reinforced concrete is assumed to be a uniform elastic continuum. Therefore, the effect of the steel reinforcement on the load transmission cannot be considered in the optimization process. Recently, the criterion of minimum strain energy has been proposed to determine the optimal layout of STMs obtained by the modified optimization method. However, the strain energy criterion does not work when the minimum strain energy in ties is zero when evaluated by mathematical equations. To address this issue, the maximum stiffness criterion is proposed to discover the optimal layout of ties in STMs by evaluating the stiffnesses of strut ties.

Zhou, Lin-Yun; Liu, ZhaoInvestigation of the buckling behaviour of thin-walled hollow concrete piersStructural Concrete3/2016491-501Technical Papers

Kurzfassung

Tall hollow concrete piers with high width-to-thickness ratios are commonly used in long-span box girder bridges. Such thin-walled structures present the possibility of failure due to local buckling. So, in common practice, diaphragms are usually included in hollow piers to improve the local stability; however, is that necessary? Although experimental research on the buckling behaviour of hollow piers has been conducted extensively, few analytical attempts have been performed to reveal the effects of the width-to-thickness ratio on local buckling behaviour. To this end, an analytical model has been proposed to investigate the local buckling behaviour of hollow piers. Following the Ritz-Timoshenko method, an analytical formula for critical local buckling stress has been developed and verified to have good accuracy compared with finite element analyses. Based on the buckling failure mode of a hollow pier with a slenderness ratio > 6, it can be reasonably postulated that the strength of the hollow pier will be unaffected by local compression flange buckling when the wall width-to-thickness ratio is < 24, and it is entirely unnecessary to include diaphragms in hollow piers for stability. Additionally, it is equally interesting that the critical width-to-thickness ratio of a hollow pier with a slenderness ratio > 4 derived using the proposed model is the same as the value given by the current AASHTO-LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
