Slate facade in the DomRömer-Quartier, Frankfurt. In the completely new old town centre, the DomRömer-Quartier, 15 of 35 houses were built according to historic guidelines as “creative new buildings”. A further 20 “modern” buildings have been built on the basis of the historic town plan and according to the guidelines of the DomRömer design rules. The pattern of the slates to the gable front in the attic storey is worth mentioning. Instead of the usual laying to the right, the architect decided on a facade, in which the slating pattern runs to the left and right of the central window with left- and right-handed slating and thus forms a symmetrical gable. Kurzfassung

There is currently an assessment system for sustainable house building in Germany for the assessment of sustainability of buildings with up to five residential units. In order to ensure practicality and update the assessment of houses to the state of the technology, selected fact sheets from the BNK criteria catalogue developed in 2015 were updated and further developed with specialist support from experts known all over Germany.

Pohl, Sebastian; Schöttner, RobinGreenhouse gas burdens and thermal storage effects over the building lifecycle / CO2-Tonnagen und Wärmespeichereffekte über den Lebenszyklus von GebäudenMauerwerk3/2019146-159Fachthemen

Kurzfassung

The study outlined in this article was intended to quantify the lifecycle assessment effects resulting from the different thermal storage capacities of the market-relevant construction methods masonry, reinforced concrete and timber frame. Independently reviewed and verified life cycle assessments of representative model homes were the starting point of this study. But the findings of available computer simulations concerning the thermal behaviour of the model homes suggest that different thermal storage capacities of construction materials induce significant deviations of the heating demand, which should also precipitate significant lifecycle assessment differences - because the overall lifecycle assessment results of a building are generally substantially determined by the energy demand during its use phase.

Schermer, Detleff; Meyer, Udo Joachim; Lutman, Marjana; Triller, PetraShear tests on highly thermal insulating clay unit masonry walls with thin layer mortar / Schubversuche an hochwärmedämmendem Ziegelmauerwerk mit DünnbettmörtelMauerwerk3/2019160-169Berichte

Kurzfassung

The paper presents the results of a series of 6 shear tests on full scale highly thermal insulating clay unit masonry walls. The walls consisted of units with large voids filled with mineral wool with a thermal conductivity of &lgr; = 0,07 W/(m · K).
The aim of the investigations was the verification of the in-plane-shear resistance of this type of thermal insulating clay unit masonry in addition to the tests reported in [1].
The current design rules for clay unit masonry in DIN EN 1996-1-1/NA are rather conservative compared to the test results for thermal insulating units.

Pfetzing, Thomas; Fehling, Ekkehard; Meyer, Udo JoachimShear capacity of brick masonry with partially supported slab / Schubtragfähigkeit von Ziegelmauerwerk mit teilweise aufliegender DeckenplatteMauerwerk3/2019170-177Fachthemen

Kurzfassung

In order to investigate the influence of a partially supported slab on the in-plane shear resistance of masonry walls, six shear tests on full scale walls were performed at the Chair of Structural Concrete of the University of Kassel in cooperation with “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Mauerziegel”. The walls were made of large chamber clay masonry units and the depths of the partially supported slabs were different. The large chamber units are typically used for thermally insulated exterior walls, with the slabs only being partially supported. The influence of this constellation is not taken into account in shear capacity assessment according to the current version of Eurocode 6 for Germany. This article describes the test results and provides a comparison with Eurocode 6. In addition, the results of older shear tests on masonry walls made of vertically perforated units with eccentric load application were used.

Kranzler, ThomasMonolithic lightweight concrete masonry for multi-storey apartment buildings / Geschosswohnungsbau mit monolithischem Mauerwerk aus LeichtbetonMauerwerk3/2019178-198Fachthemen

Kurzfassung

Affordable living space has become one of the main talking points in Germany next to the threat of climate change. The SMEs of the German lightweight concrete industry offer regional masonry solutions for detached, semi-detached, and terraced houses as well as multi-storey apartment buildings.
Particularly in densely populated urban centres, the need for multi-storey apartment buildings arises constantly. In the following the performance of monolithic lightweight concrete masonry will be described and compared with the relevant requirements for multi-storey apartment buildings. It will be demonstrated that masonry with supposedly low compressive strength can still fulfil all requirements. Of particular significance here are the external wall-slab junctions.

The shell structure of Kuwait International Airport Terminal 2 - engineering and execution of a complex mega-structure in the Digital Age
The international airport of Kuwait is currently being extended by a new terminal building designed by Foster + Partner. The new terminal is to be completed by 2022. It has an edge length of almost 1.2 km, a clear height of up to 25 m and a roof area of 320 000 m2. The building is characterized not only by its size, but also by the complexity of its roof structure. Despite its large circumference, the roof had to be designed without expansion joints. This had extensive effects on the design and calculation of all components. The roof structure is a statically highly indeterminate system. The interaction between the various components is therefore very complex, so that any change in stiffness of an element has a significant influence on the static load of the other components. The paper describes how this sophisticated design was made feasible with the help of complex digital methods and tools.
