Kurzfassung

Optimization of rock grouting procedures during construction is necessitated when sparse data sets and incomplete geologic understanding form the basis of initial design. Relying on geologic investigation findings that often have limited budgets, initial designs typically consider data from only a small volume of the entire rock mass to be grouted. During construction, thousands of production boreholes may be drilled and grouted, and each of these boreholes has the potential to provide valuable information for modifying the injection materials and construction means/methods. Implementation of procedural changes is greatly facilitated by the ability to efficiently assemble, query, visualize and interpret vast amounts of 3D data in near real-time.
This contribution summarizes the main targets of rock mass characterization in the context of grouting works, along with investigative tools that provide valuable information: (1) regarding the distribution and properties of in situ permeability features; (2) for modifying and optimizing grouting procedures; and (3) for verifying grouting results in situ. Three dimensional modeling approaches that are amenable to data visualization are reviewed, including the workflow for near real-time model updating as construction proceeds.

Kurzfassung

Grouting measures in dam construction are of increasing importance in Europe, where many of the largest dams were constructed during the 1950s and 1970s. Nowadays, these dams often have to resist higher loads then they were originally designed for, and changes of reservoir management have increased loads on the structures in many cases. For this reason, many plant operators have decided to adapt dam structures for present-day use, to increase sustainability and guarantee serviceability. At the same time, the construction of new dams requires comprehensive planning as well as full cooperation between all areas of civil engineering and grouting technology. Grouting works are key elements of dam structures, which are usually not directly visible from the surface and therefore seldom perceived by the public. This paper gives an insight into the possibilities of grouting measures in dam construction and a brief overview of objectives of grouting measures and their assignment to components of dams as well as grouting measures for waterproofing curtains, pressure tunnels, pressure shafts, surge tanks and porous mass concrete.

Hognestad, Hans-Olav; Kieffer, ScottPre-excavation grouting in rock tunneling - Dealing with high groundwater pressuresGeomechanics and Tunnelling2/2019141-146Topics

Kurzfassung

In rock tunneling, pre-excavation grouting (or, pre-injection) refers to systematic treatment of the rock mass ahead of an advancing tunnel face via pressure grouting. The main purpose of pre-excavation grouting is to reduce water inflows, or to improve geomechanical properties of the rock mass. This paper summarizes approaches for treating competent rock masses with systematic pre-injection of cementitious grouts through boreholes drilled from the working tunnel face. The focus is on traditional cement based grouting technology and drill-and-blast tunneling under high static groundwater pressures (> 20 bar). Post-injection, where drilling and grouting is performed somewhere behind the tunnel face, provides an additional means for achieving a high degree of watertightness, but is beyond the scope of this paper.

Creütz, Mikael; Osterman, FredrikThe Stockholm Bypass - Design and execution of grouting works - Pre-excavation grouting by means of rock fissure grouting with cementitious groutsGeomechanics and Tunnelling2/2019147-157Topics

Kurzfassung

The E4 Stockholm Bypass is a new route for the European highway (E4) past the Swedish capital Stockholm. The bypass will connect the southern and northern parts of Stockholm. To reduce the impact on the surroundings, 18 km of the total of 21 km of the Stockholm Bypass are being constructed in tunnels. The Bypass will be one of the longest road tunnels in the world, with a construction cost of 3.1 billion Euro (2009 prices).
The challenges have been many, for example how to evaluate the hydraulic rock mass properties for such a vast tunnel stretch and then find the most suitable grouting design, the contractor's ability to deliver proper grout properties and suitable grouting equipment, the time and resources needed for QA/QC of the grouting works and the need for adaption of the grouting works to true geological conditions. Not to mention the complexity of monitoring water ingress during construction for the Client to show that the sealing demands are being met according to the environmental permits for water works operations. The Stockholm Bypass is by far the largest rock fissure grouting operation undertaken for road tunnels in Swedish history.

Wannenmacher, Helmut; Entfellner, Manuel; Krenn, HaraldConsiderations for rock mass grouting for tunnelling in faulted rock masses with tubes á manchette / Überlegungen zu Gebirgsinjektionen für den Tunnelbau im gestörten Gebirgsverband mittels ManschettenrohrenGeomechanics and Tunnelling2/2019158-167Topics

Kurzfassung

Grouting into an open borehole is a process that has been well described academically. Numerous grouting techniques and grouting criteria are available for various applications and combinations of rock mass/ground. Tube á manchette (TAM) or sleeve port grouting systems have until now mostly been used in specialized civil engineering work in soft ground. In order to be able to carry out grouting successfully in faulted rocks, cased drilling is necessary in order to maintain the stability of the borehole for the insertion of the sleeve pipe. Under these premises, fundamental considerations for successful TAM grouting in faulted rocks are presented. The rheological properties of the grout used, the form and size of the injection opening and the strength and thickness of the sheathing compound significantly influence the penetration into the surrounding rock mass. Increased effective pressure is necessary in order to break through the sheathing compound and also to overcome friction losses during the grouting process. The necessity of high effective pressure and the emergence of the grout at the sleeve ports can, in contrast to an open borehole, increase the risk of jacking the ground in the course of grouting and this has to be carefully taken into account and investigated in advance. The interaction of effective grouting pressures and friction losses of the grouting system and their effect on the grouting process in faulted rock are described through the formulation of a general grouting criteria for TAM grouting.

Aldrian, Wolfgang; Wyink, Uwe; Herrmann, ChristophBolting with pumpable reactive resins - More than fixation of steel dowels in rockGeomechanics and Tunnelling2/2019168-174Report

Kurzfassung

Rock bolting in tunnelling and mining has been used for more than 100 years. The mechanism of how anchors behave, application and patterns have evolved into standard practices for all types of underground excavation. Passive acting bolts and dowels, as well as the active pre-tensioned bolts act in a way to limit shear and are subject to tension, which nails the rock mass together. Injection is used in underground structures to manage water ingress and less often to reinforce the rock mass systematically. Typically, the injected cementitious material fills the cracks and fissures in the rock mass and increases the shear resistance within the treated area. The use of pumpable, thixotropic, water insensitive, fast reacting resins to encapsulate rock bolts potentially offers to combine the nailing and shear resisting effect of the bolts with an injection approach. When using an accurately controlled pressure and volume regime, the rock mass can be bonded together, resulting in a significant improvement of the overall rock mass properties. A new rock bolt anchoring resin has been developed to improve the efficiency of underground support combining the positive effects of rock bolting and injections as outlined above. The driving idea behind this concept and test results are discussed in this paper.

Evaluation of clogging and wear of tools in loose rock based on model tests.
The occurrence of clogging of the cutting wheel and in the mixing chamber as well as the wear of cutting tools still represent a problem in mechanized tunneling with earth pressure balanced shield drives (EPB) and hydroshield drives. Despite different procedures for prognosis based on the plasticity and consistency indices, still massive delays of tunnel excavation occur due to clogging because interruptions are needed for cleaning of the cutting wheel and the mixing chamber. Besides the clogging problems, also abrasiveness of the subsoil frequently represents a problem, because strongly abrasive soil leads to the frequent need for changing the cutting tools. A correct assessment of clogging potential as well as of abrasiveness, especially in loose rock and mixed soils still represents a difficult task for the employer and his ideally all-embracing request for bids as well as for the contractor who has to consider the clogging potential and abrasiveness as exactly as possible in his offer. In this contribution, a new cutting wheel model test is presented, which is, in contrast to existing methods, supposed to consider the interaction of human influence, machine and subsoil in a harmonic way for the prognosis of clogging problems and problems of cutting tool wear in mechanized tunneling.

Numerical determination of the slopes stability under earthquakes - an example of an earth dam in a centrifuge experiment.
The stability of slopes can be severely affected by seismic events. Although the slope behaviour under earthquakes is complex, most calculation methods in practice assume a pseudo-static situation in which the dynamic earthquake effect is replaced by an additional static force. In this work, a recalculation of a centrifuge test is used to check to what extent the pseudo-static analysis can describe the failure by reaching the states out of the limit equilibrium. Subsequently, a dynamic FEM-recalculation of the centrifuge is been performed in order to test the potential of an advanced analysis with hypoplasticity. The results of the FEM calculation are used for the back analysis of the pseudo-static results in order to illustrate the deficits of the latter method. A possible combination of dynamic FEM-calculations and the pseudo-static analysis is discussed with respect to a more realistic procedure. For this purpose, additional dynamic FEM-calculations are carried out with an elastoplastic constitutive model.

Foundation strengthening/new foundations to the historically sensitive structure of the Pergamon Museum on the Museum Island in central Berlin.
The three-wing building for the presentation of mostly large classical objects was built between 1910 and 1936 and after 100 years requires thorough refurbishment. In order to regain complete museum functionality and provide the correct climatic conditions for the exhibited objects, extensive strengthening measures, new foundations and lowering of the basement inverts are unavoidable.
The extensive archived documents showed that the Pergamon Museum is founded at several levels at a depth of between 6 and 18 m below ground level. The deep geological scouring in the foundation formation led to great problems with the planned raft foundation after soil exchange under the protection of dewatering. The available results of the soil survey from 1912 in the area of the south wing, which until then had been built over, showed that the organic scouring extended down to about -12 m below sea level. This demanded a fundamental alteration of the foundation in this building section. Neither the dewatering plant nor the deep foundation elements available in 1912 were capable of reaching the loadbearing ground about 45 m below ground level
The stringent requirements for the deformation behaviour of the existing structures and in particular the south wing of the Pergamon Museum, which remained in use during the refurbishment works, required appropriate monitoring of reactions, which had to be constantly compared during the construction works. Both vibration and settlement curves were recorded and used as a decisive criterion for the selection of possible refurbishment technologies from specialised civil engineering. The solutions selected on site, both in the completion phase and in the current refurbishment phase, are described and discussed in this article.
