Mathematical calculation of the damping value of steel railway bridges - part I: theoretical background
Given their slim and light-weight construction characteristics, steel railway bridges tend to produce excessive vibration responses when undergoing dynamic strains. A preferably close-to-reality calculation of a bridge's vibrations during high-speed traffic must not only rely on the right choice of an adequate calculation model for both bridge and train, but first and foremost on the use of dynamic model parameters which reflect reality. However, comparisons between measured and calculated dynamic parameters of the bridge are often characterised by considerable discrepancies. Such discrepancy is particularly pronounced with regard to damping values, as conservative values have to be used in the calculations due to normative specifications and lack of knowledge. To minimise this difference and therefore make bridges more calculable in the context of predictive maintenance, this paper introduces an approach which allows to calculate the damping value of railway bridges with ballasted track. Using two pre-defined bridge models, which correspond to an enhanced Euler-Bernoulli beam, model-related determination equations for the damping are derived based on energy analyses. The derivation is guided by the basic principle of separately recording the dissipative ratios of the supporting structure and the ballasted track to the damping.

Bartsch, Helen; Eyben, Felix; Schaffrath, Simon; Feldmann, MarkusOn the plastic design of high-strength steel beamsSteel Construction4/2021222-235Articles

Kurzfassung

Particularly efficient steel components can be designed by performing a plastic global analysis of a structure made of high-strength steel (HSS) as well. However, plastic design of HSS structures is not embodied in current standards, which is why a broad research study was carried out to address different aspects of the use of HSS for plastic design. This paper deals with verified numerical investigations of the rotation capacity of HSS I-girders considering realistic true stress-strain curves, local plastic instability and damage mechanics approaches to predict ductile crack initiation. Various influences on the rotation capacity of HSS beams were assessed by varying flange and web slenderness ratios, material characteristics, system dimensions, stiffness of lateral supports and loading conditions so that recommendations for the plastic design of HSS girders can be given. It is apparent that, apart from the slenderness of the flange and the material properties, the slenderness of the web is one of the main influencing characteristics. The results show that the plastic design of HSS structures is possible when limits for cross-section class 1 are more severe for HSS grades over S460 up to S690 compared with the current limits in EN 1993-1-1.

Newcomb, Benjamin; Tousignant, KyleOptimized design of fillet welds in RHS joints for EN 1993-1-8Steel Construction4/2021236-249Articles

Kurzfassung

ISO 14346 permits fillet welds in rectangular hollow section (RHS) joints to be designed either (i) to develop the capacity of the connected brace or (ii) to resist the actual load(s) in the brace (i.e. as “fit-for-purpose”). However, no methods for design according to approach (ii) are given in the ISO or any European standard. In this paper, data from 41 weld-critical tests on RHS gapped K, T, Y and X joints under brace axial load(s) are analysed to determine a reliable method for the design of fillet welds as “fit-for-purpose”. “Weld effective length” formulae are evaluated in conjunction with EN 1993-1-8 (directional and simplified methods) according to the standard procedure of EN 1990. A reliable method, based on ISO 14346, is proposed for calculating the design resistance of all-around fillet welds in RHS gapped K, T, Y and X joints. Updates to the minimum fillet weld throat thicknesses required to develop the capacity of a connected RHS brace are also discussed.

Britner, Alexander; Dieu, Corinne; Podleschny, RalfCorrosion protection for cold-formed structural steel elementsSteel Construction4/2021250-257Articles

Kurzfassung

Unprotected steel and steel structures exposed to the atmosphere inevitably corrode. For thin-gauged structures especially, corrosion is critical for stability. Although the reduction in thickness caused by corrosion is insignificant for some structures, in other structures corrosion is unacceptable. Therefore, corrosion protection is a crucial issue for steel structures and the steel industry. Over the last decades, many new corrosion protection systems and innovative steel products have been introduced onto the market. Corrosion protection for cold-formed structural steel elements has been standardized through the introduction of the EN 1090-4. This paper introduces the harmonized rules for the corrosion protection of loadbearing thin-gauged structures. The zinc-magnesium-aluminium (ZM) metal coating system developed in recent years is also dealt with.

Misiek, Thomas; Norlin, Bert; Gitter, Reinhold; Höglund, TorstenReview of European design provisions for buckling of aluminium members with longitudinal welds - part 1Steel Construction4/2021258-269Articles

Kurzfassung

As part of the ongoing revision of the Eurocodes, design provisions in EN 1999-1-1 on the buckling of longitudinally welded aluminium compression members have been subjected to a critical review. Numerical investigations were conducted because a need for improvement was identified. This part 1 of the paper describes the individual steps of the revision and the modifications discussed, which include the introduction of longitudinally welded members. Before going into the numerical investigations in more detail, previous observations are presented regarding buckling classes and plateau lengths. In part 1 of the paper, explanations of the numerical investigations are limited to presenting the modelling of the geometry, the mechanical properties and the imperfections as well as their respective variation in the context of the parametric studies. The results of the numerical investigations and the proposed design approaches will be presented in detail in parts 2 and 3.

Pham, Ngoc Hieu; Vu, Quoc AnhEffects of stiffeners on the capacities of cold-formed steel channel membersSteel Construction4/2021270-278Articles

Kurzfassung

This paper investigates the effects of stiffeners on the compressive and flexural capacities of cold-formed steel channel members. Stiffeners are added on the web of the channel section to form a new section called SupaCee. This new section is shown to be more innovative and stable than the traditional channel section. The structural advantages of this new section are investigated by comparing the capacities of SupaCee and channel members under compression and bending. The capacities are determined by using the direct strength method (DSM) according to AS/NZS 4600:2018 with the support of THIN-WALL-2, a buckling analysis program. It was found that the stiffeners are effective for small section dimensions and thicknesses, but become ineffective for large section dimensions.

Mohammed, Asif; Cashell, Katherine A.Cross-sectional behaviour and design of ferritic and duplex stainless steel EHS in compressionSteel Construction4/2021279-287Articles

Kurzfassung

This paper describes an investigation into the cross-sectional behaviour of elliptical hollow section (EHS) columns made from ferritic and duplex stainless steel. The EHS is a relatively new structural shape with a number of favourable attributes including aesthetic appeal, high strength-to-weight ratio, good torsional resistance and excellent flexural strength. In recent years there have been significant developments in the analysis and understanding of these shapes, although most studies have focused on carbon steel EHS. The work so far is taken a step further here by considering some of the newer grades of stainless steel that are used in structural applications. A numerical model is developed and validated against test data from the literature and is then employed to generate structural performance data. Subsequently, parametric studies are performed to investigate the influence of individual parameters such as the material properties, aspect ratio and local slenderness of cross-sectional elements. The accuracy of existing design procedures is assessed by comparing the numerical data with the resistances obtained using Eurocode 3. It is shown that the cross-sectional slenderness limits given in Eurocode 3 for EHS members made from carbon steel can also be safely used for sections made from ferritic and duplex stainless steel.

Thermal comfort: standard compliant modelling of natural ventilation in adaptive time step solvers
Natural ventilation can help maintain thermal comfort during summer periods. In simulation models for thermal comfort analysis, occupant behaviour related to natural ventilation is often included through definition of ventilation rule sets, included in building codes such as DIN 4108-2. For example, windows are opened when room temperature exceeds a given limit while at the same time outside temperatures remain below a threshold. However, these rules were so far defined with respect to fixed step time integration methods. Straight-forward implementation of such rules in error controlled adaptive time step integration solvers (e.g. included in THERAKLES, DELPHIN, COMSOL, MODELICA-solvers etc.) fails. The article discusses strategies and model variants that work with such modern solvers and discusses new model parameters such as the delay time or dead-band size. The impact of these parameter choices is illustrated with sensitivity studies using the thermal room model THERAKLES.

Normative vs. realistic ventilation behaviour - effect of different ventilation strategies on the energy demand
User behaviour can cause a large discrepancy between the calculated energy demand and the actual energy consumption of buildings. In a project funded by the Zukunft Bau research initiative, the room set point temperature was found to be the greatest influencing factor. Based on these results, the influence of different ventilation strategies on the energy demand was investigated. For this purpose, different ventilation pro-files reflecting different times of presence in the building were simulated in a thermal building simulation program with hourly variable outdoor climate conditions and compared with standard-compliant calculations. It has been shown that, compared to the permanent ventilation assumed by the standard, intermittent ventilation results in a considerable saving of useful heat energy, however, the number of ventilation processes plays a minor role. The comparison with measurements of the energy consumption in the building shows that the usage profiles with realistic ventilation behaviour show a significantly smaller discrepancy than the norm-compliant usage profile.

Climate data as an essential component for the assessment of summer thermal insulation
Test reference years are hourly meteorological data developed by the German Weather Service for a complete year, which, depending on the type of application, reflect a representative weather pattern. The test reference years are an essential component for the assessment of summer heat insulation. The current approach of the test reference years always leads to difficulties, as they are very simplified and generalized. Due to climate change and the resulting extreme weather conditions, the use of suitable climate data is essential. Here, the newly developed location-specific test reference years of the German Weather Service from 2017 represent a possible alternative.

Investigations on thermal protection in summer - Part 3: Modeling of complex geometries and different material properties of shading systems
A series of three articles investigates the thermal protection of buildings in summer using different methods and boundary conditions. Part 1 compares the code compliance methods prescribed by DIN 4108-2 and considers future climate data. Part 2 deals with multi-dimensional approaches to model shading systems. Part 3 presents a new approach to model shading systems that consist of non-standard geometries and highly reflective materials.
In part 3 external shading systems are investigated with respect to their geometry and material properties using the method of BSDF matrices which has been presented in part 2. One focus of the investigation is set on the choice of the calculation approach to generate the BSDF. The radiosity approach is compared with numerical raytracing as means to generate the necessary metrics in the shortwave and longwave range of radiation. Based on the building simulation results the impact of the chosen method as well as the influence of different geometries, highly reflective surfaces, and a low-e coating on the back side of the blinds is assessed. Finally, the resulting differences are put into the context of code compliance calculations regarding thermal protection of buildings in summer time.
