AbstractWith the ever-increasing depth of mines, the management of heat has become a key issue for their design and operation. There are two main sources of heat: heat transfer from the rock mass into the mine workings and heat associated with mining operations. The principles of heat transfer from the rock mass are discussed and basic relationships presented. Sources of heat linked to mining operations are discussed. It is shown that in deep-level mines, heat transfer from the rock mass accounts more than 75 % of total mine heat load. In highly mechanized coal mines, heat from the use of mining machinery is also significant. Some models of heat flow prediction for deep gold mines are presented. It is shown that in the case of deep mines, control of heat flow is more important than increasing refrigeration capacity. Examples of heat flow management methods are given. x

AbstractThe Koralm tunnel forms the central part of the route of the Koralmbahn railway from Graz to Klagenfurt in the section Deutschlandsberg- St. Andrä. The tunnel, split into three construction contracts (KAT 1,2 and 3) connects the federal states of Carinthia and Styria in Austria with a length of 32.8 km. Continuous tunnelling is intended for the section through the central mountain complex of the Koralpe. The very variable geological conditions (rock and loose ground sections, overburden of up to approx. 1,200 m, possible high water pressures and pronounced zones of faulting and fracturing) represent a major challenge for the implementation of mechanical tunnelling (tunnelling, lining and logistics concepts). The present article discusses the geological and hydrogeological conditions as well as the basic concepts for support and machine system and the particular measures to overcome squeezing rock conditions. x

AbstractIn an early planning phase for the Granitztal tunnel chain, which forms part of the Koralm railway running between Graz and Klagenfurt, Austria, the continuous tunnelling method has been taken into consideration, at least in some sections, in addition to sequential or conventional tunnelling. This paper deals with the investigations that eventually led to the decision to consider both tunnelling methods in the detailed tender design for one section of the tunnel chain, and to let competition decide which tunnelling method to choose. x

Wagner, Horst | The management of heat flow in deep mines (part 2) | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 2/2011 | 157-163 | Topics |
AbstractIn Part 1 of “The Management of Heat Flow in Deep Mines” the sources of heat, mechanism of heat transfer and strategies of controlling heat transfer have been discussed. Part 2 deals with the effects of heat on the human body and mine cooling strategies for deep mines. In detail the effects of heat on a worker are examined, heat stress and heat tolerance discussed and methods of assessing heat stress in different mining situations presented. Experiences from deep South African gold mines highlight the adverse effects of heat stress environment on safety and labour productivity. The principal methods of cooling of deep and ultra deep mines are discussed. It is shown that auto-compression of ventilation air is a deciding factor governing the choice of surface or underground cooling of ventilation air. In the case of deep and ultra deep mines, the use of chilled service water and ice slurry has shown to be the most cost effective means of mine cooling. In the case of ice slurry as cooling medium advantage is taken of the latent heat of ice which significantly reduces the amount of water required for mine cooling and hence the cost of pumping the water to surface. Cooling strategies for moderately deep, deep and ultra deep mines are discussed. Examples of cooling of deep long mine tunnels are given. x
Wagner, Horst; Ladinig, Tobias; Blaha, Hannes | Design considerations for pillar systems in deep mines | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2016 | 524-528 | Topics |
AbstractPillar systems in mines are statically indeterminate systems. The paper presents the results of numerical investigations to evaluate the effects of panel dimensions on pillar loads. It is shown that pillar load in deep mines is strongly influenced by the lateral and vertical extent of extraction panels. The commonly applied tributary area concept does not account for these effects and is an oversimplification that has to be applied with caution. The effects of local pillar failures on stability of pillar workings are examined using simple models. It is shown that limiting panel dimensions by substantial barrier pillars can reduce the danger of regional pillar collapses and enhance overall mine stability. x

AbstractSince construction work of section SBT3.1 has started in May 2016, all contract sections of the Semmering Base Tunnel are under construction. Therefore, the geotechnical prediction designed for the tendering transforms to the framework planning required for construction. During the tendering process, the crucial aim of the geotechnical prediction is to depict the expected ranges of the general conditions for contract design and cost estimation. The framework planning for construction on the other hand defines the minimum requirements for tunnel driving at the expected ground conditions. The specification of requirements is set for all driving works - for tunnel and cross-sections as well as for shafts and complex areas with caverns and therefore varies in expected ground conditions and in complexity of the structure. If the need for an adjustment is indicated on site, the framework plan can be revised in justified cases. x

AbstractSince the start of construction on contract SBT3.1 in May 2016, all three tunnel construction contracts for the Semmering Base Tunnel are now under construction. From the geological and geotechnical point of view, this represents the transition from the geotechnical prediction for the design for tendering to the documentation in the course of construction. The paper describes the considerations about the systematics of ground characterisation and the definition of ground types in the course of producing the ground prediction for the design for tendering. It also describes the requirements for the documentation of ground conditions encountered during the advance, the updating of the prediction for the daily specification of support measures and the comparison of prediction and actual conditions for contractual purposes. x

AbstractThe second of the three tunnelling contract sections of the Semmering Base Tunnel is of comparable complexity to the first contract section SBT2.1. The geotechnical and hydrological conditions for sequential tunnelling are demanding and require extensive grouting and investigation measures in advance of the drives. The enormous extent of the construction works and the need to access parts of the running tunnels through an intermediate construction access are a logistical challenge. The construction time is also very ambitious. These circumstances had to be considered in the production of the tender documents. x
