12. Mai - Brüssel

Circular Construction Workshop

12th May 2020 (14:00-17:30)

Rue du Lombard 34-42, 1000 Brussels

The Construction Confederation in Belgium will host the Final ECCS ‘Circular Construction’ workshop together with ECCREDI (European Council for Construction Research, Development and Innovation) and member associations such as ACE (Architects Council of Europe), FIEC (European Construction Industry Federation), ECCE (European Convention for Civil Engineers), and others in Brussels on 12 May 2020. This conference will feature a presentation of the overall results of the PROGRESS project (Provisions for greater reuse of steel structures) as well as key presentations from project partners on various aspects of the project. PROGRESS provides solutions for reusing components of single-storey steel buildings that are adaptable to other building types and materials. The results of PROGRESS are particularly important in the current policy climate, reflecting the GREEN DEAL: circularity, re-use, waste management and commercial solutions. The presentations will include one on a prototype for a steel elements trading platform. Another perspective on circular construction will be presented by the Project Drive0, which focuses on circular building renovation.

The goal of DRIVE 0 is to speed up the deep and circular process by improving a customer-centred circular renovation process. The Project Team is trying to improve circular renovations and make them environmentally friendly, cost effective and more attractive for consumers and investors.

PROGRESS in an EU funded project under RFCS, the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (July 2017 to June 2020) under grand agreement No. 747847. The PROGRESS project will provide methodologies, tools and recommendations on reusing steel-based components from existing and planned buildings. The project particularly targets the design for deconstruction and reuse of envelopes, loadbearing frames, trusses and secondary elements of singlestorey buildings framed in steel. This building type has broad applicability as industrial, commercial, sports, exhibition, warehouse facilities, and shows most potential in suitability for reuse and viability for circulareconomy business models. The whole life benefits of reusable single-storey steel buildings will be quantified from environmental and economic viewpoints. The outcomes will be extensively disseminated, in particular among manufacturers, designers, contractors and researchers.

The project offers a completely new point of view on the design and execution of buildings and manufacture of construction products. They will be no longer considered as end products, but instead in the scope of circular economy as a part of continuous chain of the products ecosystem. The construction and demolition waste will become a new resource to be considered in the future buildings design.
