Assessing, preserving and strengthening existing structures have become important tasks for civil engineers in research, education and practice and have sustainably been furthered by the now significant economic relevance of converting buildings for re-use.

With the theme of heritage buildings this issue's topics only takes up small portion of the subject. However, it has no comparable economic importance and especially with regard steel structures it is very much subordinated. Why is that still so?
