AbstractRather than treating final publication of EC3 and EC4 as signalling that research into the behaviour and design of structural steelwork should now reduce because justification is less, the argument is made that there may well be an increasing need as the discovery of shortcomings, limitations and omissions in those Codes provides another, potentially very fertile, source of new challenges. Several illustrations of different types of “opportunities for improvement” are provided in support of this contention. x

AbstractThe European Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD) obliges the member states to ensure that, by 31 December 2020, all new buildings are nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB). This paper presents solutions for steel-intensive commercial buildings that achieve this requirement. Several key components such as façades, floor systems and steel piles for ground energy storage were investigated in detail using numerous numerical simulations and practical tests of selected options. Furthermore, options for a whole building which fulfil the zero-energy building approach were identified for different European climates by performing a parametric study using a thermal building simulation tool. x

AbstractThis paper describes the design and construction of the unique widening of a concrete arch bridge over the River Ohe using a lightweight steel superstructure. The bridge reconstruction formed part of the wider reconstruction measures for road I/6, including its upgrade from a two- to a four-lane highway, near Loket between Nové Sedlo and Sokolov in the north-west of the Czech Republic. Details of the erection of the steel structure and the strengthening of the concrete arch and piers are also given. x
Fivet, Corentin | Steel, a material to reuse - Swiss steelweek+ 2021 | Stahlbau | 4/2022 | 268-273 | Berichte |
AbstractThe destructive impact of the construction industry on the planet and its inhabitants is no longer in question. Global warming, waste management, depletion of natural resources, air and soil pollution are all issues that must be urgently addressed. They are also challenging the current economy, whose growth is directly correlated to the extraction of raw materials, the manufacture of new products and, ultimately, to their increased consumption. Besides, the constant transformation of the built environment and infrastructure of a territory is a necessary lever for sustainable development and for guaranteeing the well-being of all. Faced with this situation, an emerging circular strategy could be salutary: component reuse, which makes it possible to build new assemblies without manufacturing new materials. Steel, if assembled with reversible means, is a particularly well-suited material for reuse. But are the stakeholders ready to adopt new business models? x

Classen, Martin; Stark, Alexander; Hegger, Josef | Steel-HSC composite beams with partial shear connection and miniaturized limited-slip-capacity connectors | Steel Construction | 1/2018 | 94-103 | Articles |
AbstractThe flexural strength of steel-concrete composite members depends on both the shear capacity and the ductility of the shear connectors between steel beam and concrete slab. Plastic design strategies of composite beams (equilibrium method) allow the shear strength of the connectors to be easily considered. However, these models do not take into account the deformation behaviour of the connectors nor their limited slip capacity. Several design codes only allow ductile shear connectors with a deformation capacity &dgr;ult of at least 6 mm to be used, while composite beams with non-ductile connectors (&dgr;ult < 6 mm) are excluded from plastic design. Consequently, promising innovative shear connectors with non-ductile deformation behaviour cannot be used economically. Using the example of the miniaturized pin connector, this paper illustrates how finite element models of composite beams - considering both the shear and slip capacities of the connectors - can be used to derive the minimum degree of partial shear connection for beams with limited slip capacity. The proposed modelling strategy and the methodology for deducing the minimum degree of partial shear connection can be transferred and assigned to other types of shear connector with either a ductile or non-ductile deformation behaviour. x

AbstractDuring inspection work, when the pipe is empty, a thin-walled steel pipe is susceptible to shell buckling due to external pressure. Comprehensive research activities, including tests, began in the 1960s, and analytical and empirical formulae were developed for design. x
Ruopp, Jakob; Kuhlmann, Ulrike | Steel-to-concrete joints with large anchor plates under shear loading | Steel Construction | 2/2017 | 115-124 | Articles |
AbstractIn industry and plant engineering especially, high flexibility is required at joints between steel and concrete. According to current standards, the maximum number of fasteners is limited to an arrangement of 3 × 3 anchors on an anchor plate. The load-carrying behaviour of large anchor plates under tension, shear and restraining forces was investigated within the scope of the research project “Large Anchor Plates with Headed Studs for Highly Stressed Constructions in Industry and Plant Engineering”. This paper describes the research results obtained at the University of Stuttgart for large anchor plates under shear loading. Findings for large anchor plates under tension and restraining forces are given in [20], which were mainly investigated at the University of Kaiserslautern. x
