Vidmar, Gregor; Knez, Friderik | Measuring and modelling of linear water vapour transmittance of steel sandwich panels with mineral wool | Bauphysik | 4/2015 | 229-236 | Fachthemen |
AbstractNowadays the measurement of water vapour diffusion resistance factor of building components is performed according to EN ISO 12572 or EN 12086. Both these standards use cup methods. However, measuring vapour transmission in this way by means of linear or point water vapour bridges would be difficult because of the limited sample size and shape. Therefore in this study water vapour pressure equipment with twin chambers, according to the old Slovenian standard JUS U.J5.024 standard were used, enhanced with a guard chamber. 15 cm thick sandwich panels composed of 2 steel sheets with a mineral wool core and 5 types of joints were measured. The type of sealant used between the steel sheets (outer and inner pair) and mineral wool differs: without it, with a PUR or with an EPDM sealant. Due to the slow process of water vapour diffusion through such panels, measurements were stopped well before steady state was reached. Experimental results were modelled to obtain linear water vapour transmittance. Our modelling function contains 2 fit-parameters. Due to the vapour-guard, final results improve systematically. Modelling procedure works on panels, which are faster than standardised steady-state ones. x

Vicente, Bruno Andrés | Arroyo Vega flood relief tunnel design | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 2/2023 | 175-183 | Topics |
AbstractThis article aims to present structural and geotechnical design challenges of the flood relief project “Segundo Emisario del Arroyo Vega”, part of Buenos Aires city hydraulic master plan. Works comprised the execution of an 8.4 km-long tunnel for relief of the existing sewer network. Tunnel alignment develops in a highly populated area, with important interferences such as two metro lines, three railway lines and a main potable water tunnel. All tunnel sections extend mostly within firm, silty soils. Overburden varies between 15 and 25 m. The downstream section was executed with a 6.1 m-diameter Earth pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPB TBM) launched from a 35 m-diameter shaft with water table pressures up to 200 kPa. Break-in was performed across a watertight, plastic diaphragm wall cell, which allowed safe shaft wall manual demolition, resulting in a very safe TBM launch. The tunnel upstream section, 2.85 m in diameter, was executed using pipe jacking technology, with the peculiarity of using bidirectional launch shafts along its alignment. To allow water entrance from existing system - through flow diversion chambers - into the new relief tunnel, openings were made in the TBM tunnel, with connection areas of 4 to 7 m2. Its design was particularly challenging, given that unbolted segmental lining was used. x

AbstractThe 450-metre long Kuckuckslay Tunnel is a double track railway tunnel dating from 1871. It is located in Germany on the line between Trier and Cologne along the river Kyll. Since its commissioning, the tunnel is a non-electrified line and has undergone only a few refurbishing measures. In 2018, a joint venture was commissioned to refurbish the Kuckuckslay Tunnel. During a 2.5-year construction period, the Kuckuckslay Tunnel will be expanded using conventional tunnelling and provided with a new concrete lining. The so-called 'Tunnel-im-Tunnel-Methode' would be used for the expansion, during which rail traffic could be maintained. In this case, the loading gauge of the railway in the area of the tunnelling work would be protected by a mobile construction rig. The Kuckuckslay Tunnel construction project offered a particular challenge due to the severely limited space inside and outside the tunnel, as well as the environmental conditions within a protected area. This article describes how these challenges were implemented and gives an overview of the state of work, as well as technical solutions and experience from the work completed. x

AbstractThe historic rail tunnels in the Alps were consistently built in the form of single-tube twin-track tunnels, starting with the Mont Cenis Tunnel (1871). Only the 19.8 km long Simplon Tunnel at the start of the 20th century was built with two separate single-track tunnels. In 1988, the 53.8 km long Seikan Tunnel became the first tunnel more than 50 km long to go into operation - once more as a twin-track tunnel, although with additional constructional elements such as forced ventilation, emergency stations and a service tunnel. In 1994 followed the Channel Tunnel with a system of two single-track tunnels and a service or safety tunnel as well as a complex ventilation system. For the base tunnels through the Alps, the question arose in Switzerland at the start of the 1990s, what is the optimal tunnel system considering the requirements of construction, safety and operation? A cost-benefit analysis resulted in a system with two single-track tunnels and multi-function stations at the third points as the optimum. Meanwhile, various requirements have been newly formulated so that the question arises whether the same decision would be made with the knowledge available today. x
