Pohlplatz, K. | Mauerwerksverfestigung mittels Kunstharzen | Mauerwerk | 3/2009 | 140-146 | Fachthemen |

Pointner, Peter; Höfer-Öllinger, Giorgio | Geological tests on site / Baubegleitende geologische Untersuchungen | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 6/2019 | 695-701 | Topics |
AbstractIn addition to laboratory analysis, tests can be carried out on site to support the geological underground documentation. They should cover the important parameters on the project and be easy and time-saving to implement. This article describes a selection of methods and their suitability for use on construction sites. The tests comprise determination of water content, grain size distribution as well as the implementation of point load and Cerchar abrasiveness tests. For all these tests, the practical application on the site of the Koralm Tunnel contract KAT 3 and implementation details are explained. For all on-site tests, it is recommended that the results gained should be compared with the experimental procedure and the results of laboratory analyses. x

AbstractThe bidding consortium 3G Gruppe Geotechnik Graz ZT GmbH and Pöyry Infra GmbH as well as Geoconsult ZT GmbH and BGG Consult Dr. Peter Waibel ZT-GmbH were awarded the contract for the geological and hydrogeological documentation during the construction of the 33 km long Koralm Tunnel, which was split into three lots. To assess the potential for scale deposition, ongoing documentation and surveys of the groundwater inflows were undertaken in addition to the usual hydrogeological documentation. The scope of documentation included mapping of scale deposition and groundwater inflows, regular site visits and sampling of water and solids in the excavated tunnel (shotcrete and segmental lining) both during and after excavation works. Furthermore, long-term monitoring of the water inflows (on-site parameters, determination of / changes in humidity) and laboratory analysis of the individual and mixed groundwater samples identified the parameters required to assess the potential for scale deposition. The documentation, analysis and assessments provided the basis for ultimately deciding which tunnel sections would require hardness stabilisation measures to reduce or inhibit scaling and calcium carbonate precipitations in the drainage system during the operational phase. x
Poisel, Alexander; Meier, Alexander; Bach, Dietmar | The application of the guideline for the geotechnical design of underground structures with TBM excavation in Austria | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 1/2023 | 38-46 | Topics |
AbstractIn 2013, the Austrian Society for Geomechanics published the Guideline for the Geotechnical Design of Underground Structures with TBM Excavation. The Guideline contains general procedures for the geotechnical design and construction. In the design phase, the first steps are evaluating different ground conditions by classifying different ground types, different ground behaviours, their categorization into ground behaviour types, and the determination of construction measures derived from the ground behaviour. On this basis the expected system behaviour in each system sector of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) is predicted and described in detail to enable comparison in the construction phase. In the construction phase, geotechnical relevant ground parameters as well as observations regarding the actual system behaviour are recorded and compared with the assumptions of the design. The geotechnical design is updated continuously based on the encountered ground conditions and geotechnical observations. The improved quality of the geotechnical model allows an optimization of the construction while meeting all safety and environmental requirements. In the first part of the article, the general procedures of the guideline are described and parameters to describe the system behaviour in each system sector adequately are listed. In the second part of the article, the implementation of the guideline during design and construction at the Semmering Basetunnel in Austria is described. x

AbstractAt the construction lot SBT 2.1 “Tunnel Fröschnitzgraben” of the Semmering Base Tunnel (SBT) in Austria caverns with a cross section up to 300 m2 are excavated in a depth of approximately 400 m, which are the central part of the emergency station. The site arrangement results in a complex situation of large cross sections within a small area. Additionally, complex ground conditions exist, because the degree of fracturing of the rock mass differs frequently and the rock mass strength is occasionally very low. Especially at the intersection of the caverns displacements increase over a long period of time. The observed system behavior is described and analyzed based on the geotechnical design taking the encountered ground conditions into account. Sequences of rock mass sections with different stiffness and strength are of high geomechanical significance due to stress concentrations in the competent areas. This had particular impact on the observed system behavior. With regard to the stability of the overall system influences of various drives and the excavation of large cross sections in several steps must be considered. Moreover, an influence of the excavation size on the extension of the area with displacement increases or stress redistributions must be taken into account. x

Poisel, R.; Preh, A.; Hungr, O. | Run Out of Landslides - Continuum Mechanics versus Discontinuum Mechanics Models | Geomechanik und Tunnelbau | 5/2008 | 358-366 | Fachthemen |
AbstractIn general, a rock slope failure leads to the detachment of a rock mass consisting of a mass of blocks. During the last few years continuum mechanics as well as discontinuum mechanics numerical codes have been developed for modelling the run out of these masses. In order to compare both methods, Punta Thurwieser Rock Avalanche and Frank Slide were modelled by the continuum mechanics numerical code DAN3D as well as by the distinct element method PFC3D modified for run out modelling. The simulations showed that the parameters necessary to get results coinciding with observations in nature are completely different and that Frank run out was a real “slide” of a coherent mass, whereas Punta Thurwieser run out was a rock mass fall with much internal movement. The parameters for a run out simulation, therefore, have to be chosen in such a way that the simulation gives a rock mass fall in one particular case and a slide of a coherent mass in another, corresponding to the real conditions. Therefore, the prediction of the run out kinematics and the fixing of the parameters is a demanding task in each case when modelling run outs. x
Poisel, R.; Tentschert, E.; Preh, A.; Ostermann, V.; Chwatal, W.; Zettler, A. | The interaction of machine and rock mass analysed using TBM data and rock mass parameters / Interaktion Maschine-Gebirge analysiert mittels TBM-Daten und Gebirgskennwerten | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2010 | 510-519 | Topics |
AbstractStatistical investigations of TBM data and rock parameters have shown that interactions determined theoretically or in the laboratory are often not realistic because the interaction of the machine with the rock mass is considerably influenced by the type of machine in use, the machine driver and the characteristics of the rock mass. Evaluations of excavation data have shown that the maximum net advance rate is not produced by the maximum thrust force, even in the same rock type. Individualised optimisation of the interaction on the basis of continuously recorded machine data and basic information about the rock mass (type of rock, degree of jointing), which can be determined by geological and geophysical investigations during tunnelling, is therefore of particular significance for economical tunnelling. The evaluation of these data should not replace but rather supplement the control of the machine by the driver. x

AbstractAfter heavy rainfalls, a rock slide and a consecutive debris flow a mudslide comprising a volume between 3,5 and 5 million m3 was reactivated in Gschliefgraben valley (Gmunden, Upper Austria province) in 2007/2008. The mudslide moved downwards with displacement velocities of some metres per day, until it could be stopped finally. The geologic-geotechnical model for the mudslide as well as the mechanisms and processes are described. They are influenced essentially by the pore water pressure and by the hydrostatic head. Comprehensive investigations showed that the clayey-silty-sandy-pebbly masses in the Gschliefgraben are especially sensible to changes of water content and acting stresses. Based on these geologic-geotechnical models for the movement process the mitigation measures carried out are described and their effects as well as their success are evaluated critically. x

AbstractIn the former quarry near Spitz many rockslides have occurred during operation as well as after closure. They endangered a railway, the Wachau-bicycle route, an important road and the left Danube river bank. Therefore, a protection embankment and a rock fall fence were constructed as well as a monitoring system installed automatically closing all traffic routes, when rock face displacements are exceeding a threshold. In order to clarify the need for risk reduction measures, the hazard caused by the former quarry near Spitz was investigated by x

AbstractThis paper provides an assessment of the use of pressure fall-off data during the Dounreay Shaft Isolation Project. The instrumentation controlling the injection of grout monitors and records both the pressure and the flow rate throughout the process, so pressure fall-off data is collected during any pauses to, and at the end of, each grout injection. The shapes of the pressure fall-off vs time curves have been examined qualitatively and categorised. The fall-off data has also been examined using PanSystem well test software, which creates the pressure change and pressure derivative curves, then attempts to simulate the fall-off curve by iteration after selection of a flow and boundary model chosen from the wide range available. The implications that the shapes of the pressure and derivative curves and the flow and boundary models have for the grout curtain have been examined. The caveats that surround the quantitative use of results from Pan-System analyses for a cement grout rather than a Newtonian fluid are discussed. x
