Business-cards from business partners often contain a number of abbreviations following the name - especially if the person comes from a country which is either British or characterized as British. This article describes the meaning behind of “Robert Smith BEng(Hons) PhD CEng MICE MIStructE”.
Firstly it is pointed out that academic professions in the construction industry are not directly comparable between Germany and Anglo-Saxon countries, secondly the education and professional development are influenced significantly by professional institutions and, thirdly the abbreviations are either academic degrees or grades of memberships in professional institutions. As an example the education and professional development of a civil engineer and the resulting business-card are described.
Attached are empirical formulas which will enable the far reaching decoding of business-cards from business partners from or related to the construction industry.
Steel Construction is the official journal for ECCS members
The ECCS - European Convention for Constructional Steelwork and Ernst & Sohn have agreed that the journal Steel Construction founded by Ernst & Sohn in 2008 is to be the official journal for ECCS members from 2010 onwards.
The ECCS, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork, is an umbrella organization for the national steelwork associations with their worldwide connections to steel fabricators and erectors, architects, consulting engineers, universities, research institutes and representatives of the European Commission. The results of this technical and scientific collaboration can be found in numerous books. And from now on this broad range of publications will be supplemented by the journal Steel Construction.

On the 70th birthday of Gerhard Sedlacek
On November 12, 2009, Gerhard Sedlacek, former professor for steel construction at the RWTH Aachen, turned 70.
On behalf of Ernst & Sohn, the "Stahlbau" editorial team has the pleasurable task of congratulating Professor Gerhard Sedlacek on the occasion of his 70th birthday. We also wish to thank him for his contribution to further developing literature on steel construction in general and in particular the journals "Stahlbau" and "Steel Construction – Design and Research". Professor Sedlacek took over as the editor of "Stahlbau" after Professor Joachim Lindner in 1993 and held this post until 1995. As a member of the editorial committee of "Stahlbau" and of the editorial board for "Steel Construction – Design and Research" he supports the editorial team with his help and advice.
We wish Gerhard Sedlacek health and happiness in the years to come.
