Ladies and Gentlemen,
the tragic catastrophy at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan with its unforseable consequences shows what can happen if highly sensitive technology is not state of the art, when safety mechanisms fail and when potential risks are not fully considered during the planning and design phases. The technological possibilities of sustainable and safe energy generation are again the center of public attention – in this part of the world, too. The goal should be to reduce reliance on nuclear energy while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. In our journals you will find numerous articles on alternative methods of energy production in the coming issues. Our article database offers a number of papers on offshore wind farms. During the last few weeks we of course have hoped along with our colleagues at Wiley-Blackwell in Japan that the ramifications of the nuclear disaster remain manageable. Only geographically is Japan far away. There is no absolute security. Learning from one another nowadays may mean learning to survive. Many Japanese authors publish in our journals. Sustainable construction in Japan is the thematic focus of the first edition of our new journal Structural Concrete. 2011 was named the year of friendship between Germany and Japan - 150 years ago Prussia and Japan signed a treaty dedicated to amity, commerce and navigation. On this occasion the Bundeswehr University Munich at Neubiberg the exhibit "Bridges to Japan" is being shown until the end of May. It is dedicated to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Bridges do connect. Your Rainer Bratfisch Editorial team |

| Wind parks in the German Bight – a challenge for geotechnics Download the article from geotechnik 1/2011 for free. Gerd Gudehus The foundations for offshore wind energy plants (OWEP) in the German Bight, with water depths of up to 30 m, are a challenge. Waves more than 20 m high can turn over meters of sandy ground, they tilt and lift embedded structures and can lead to capsizing. |

| Bergmeister, Konrad / Fingerloos, Frank / Wörner, Johann-Dietrich (eds.) Beton-Kalender 2011 Schwerpunkte: Kraftwerke, Faserbeton November 2010. ISBN: 978-3-433-02954-1 This work published in two volumes, applies the performance rationale, advanced in applied building physics, to the design and construction of buildings. After an overview of materials for thermal insulation, water proofing, air tightening and vapour tightening and a discussion on joints, building construction is analysed, starting with the excavations. Then foundations, below and on grade constructions, typical load bearing systems and floors pass the review to end with massive insulated outer walls and cavity walls the first volume. In continuation the second volume discusses light-weight construction with wooden and metal elements, roofing systems, façades, and ends with finishes and the overall risk analysis. Most chapters build on a same scheme: overview, overall performance evaluation, design and construction. |

| Fouad, Nabil A. (ed.) Bauphysik-Kalender 2012 Schwerpunkt: Gebäudediagnostik March 2012. ISBN: 978-3-433-02986-2 Building diagnostics are a key topic in building physics both for surveying and assessing existing structures but also for implementing equipment to monitor the operability of new structures e.g. with regard to indoor air quality or structural safety. Day-long seminar related to the book: The 5th Building Physics Yearbook Day is planned for June 1st, 2012, in Hanover. |
