Anders, Nicole | Detection possibilities of pore structures / Detektionsmöglichkeiten von Porenstrukturen | Mauerwerk | 5/2017 | 298-306 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungAutoclaved aerated concrete, hereafter referred to as AAC, is characterized as a building material by its very good thermal insulation. This is achieved by a very high porosity of the microstructure. The size of the pores ranges from millimetres to nanometres and depends on the position as well as on the origin of the pore. These can be differentiated into propellant pores, web pores and intercrystalline or interparticle pores. Because of the broad pore size range, it has not been fully explained until now, which pore sizes significantly affect the building material qualities and to what extent. The overall pore size distribution of AAC can only be detected by a combination of different microstructure analysis methods. x

KurzfassungWhen using shield machines, the excavation support is established using prefabricated concrete segments. The structurally required cavity between the built ring and the rock mass is usually filled with pea gravel in hard rock conditions. The backfilled material ensures the necessary bedding and evenly distributes the rock loads. To evaluate the in-situ deformation behaviour of pea gravel, a testing device was developed that measures the reaction of the backfill under load increase and load decrease on the basis of the static load plate test. The test is carried out via the opening for pea gravel injection. The results have shown that the elasticity of pea gravel is predominantly influenced by the load level and the type of loading. x

KurzfassungThe method for calculating airborne sound insulation between apartments as specified in DIN EN 12354-1:2000 has been used for many years - and is increasingly being used - in architectural design. This article will give a short overview of the basic principles of this calculation method, highlighting some special aspects, and will then focus on its application in practice. In particular, the experience gained with the KS Schallschutzrechner software (calculator for the prediction of sound insulation between dwellings and terraced houses ), which has now been in use for twelve years, demonstrates that - in spite of the improved prognostic accuracy - the method is not more labour-intensive than that of the previous procedure specified in DIN 4109 Supplement 1, provided suitable design aids are used. x

KurzfassungThe construction joint venture NouvLR is constructing the new light rail network in Montreal. One of the major challenges is the advance below the existing runways and taxiways of the Montreal-Trudeau International airport and the construction of the subway station below the airport. The airport must remain under operation during the construction, and very tight requirements have been imposed regarding the tolerable surface settlements and availability of the monitoring data. The regulations regarding operations of the airport and possible presence of foreign objects in vicinity of its runways and taxiways represent an additional challenge, requiring usage of less straightforward monitoring concepts. The works for the installation of the monitoring equipment must be closely coordinated with airport operations and require a reliable schedule. x

KurzfassungDue to the coming introduction of Eurocode 6 (DIN EN 1996) in Germany many structural engineers ask for design assistances in order to apply the regulations and to accomplish the calculations in a cost-effective manner. At the same time however, such design tables must result in efficient solutions with respect to the materials used because masonry has to compete with other building materials. This article adresses this issue. Design tables to determine the load bearing capacity using the very simplified and simplified calculation methods in accordance with DIN EN 1996-3/NA are presented. Additionally diagrams for assessing the required minimum load on external walls exposed to wind loads and for determining the size of basement walls subjected to lateral earth pressure are given. This leads to the conclusion that, in almost all practical cases, it is possible to determine the cross-section resistance of unreinforced masonry in accordance with Eurocode 6 quickly and effectively while still making the best possible use of the materials employed. x

KurzfassungEasy-to-use verification equations are available for the verifications in the simplified calculation method. This applies also for the structural fire design of those masonry types for which a verification with the utilisation factor &agr;fi is given in the National Annex DIN EN 1996-1-2/NA. In specific applications, however, a classification can only be made applying the utilisation factor &agr;6,fi. In these cases, the verification for the structural fire design by calculation is considerably more complex than the mathematical verification of the structural design in the “cold state”. The present paper shows how the design equation for &agr;6,fi can be made significantly easier with regard to its application by reference to the design value of the vertical load bearing resistance in the simplified method. Moreover, an upper limit value for the utilisation factor &agr;6,fi for the simplified method is summarised in tables. x

KurzfassungWith the introduction of Eurocodes, non-linear methods are now explicitly permitted for the determination of internal forces. Although the application of Eurocode 7 has not been intended for tunnel construction, it is applied in practice. Tunnel linings are treated as retaining structures in the sense of Eurocode 7. The choice of the Design Approach to be applied is specified in the National Annex (NA) of each country. The application of a standard to a field which was not intended for the purpose naturally leaves room for diverse interpretation. A working group was established by the Austrian Society for Geomechanics (ÖGG) to develop a consistent design strategy for tunnelling. Recommendations based on comparative calculations have been developed for the design of sprayed concrete linings. This article summarises the findings of the investigations carried out. x

Snijder, H.; Hoenderkamp, J.; Bakker, M.; Steenbergen, H.; de Louw, C. | Design rules for lateral torsional buckling of channel sections subject to web loading | Stahlbau | 4/2008 | 247-256 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungChannel sections are widely used in practice as beams. However, design rules for eccentrically loaded (not through shear centre) beams with channel cross-sections are not available in Eurocode 3. In this paper five proposed design rules are summarised, explained and their validity is checked by Finite Element analyses. The design rules yield ultimate loads that are compared to ultimate loads from geometrical and material nonlinear analyses of imperfect (GMNIA) beams with channel cross-sections. A parameter study is performed by varying the dimensions of the cross-section, the span length to section height ratio of the beams, the type of loading and the point of load application but is limited to load application through the web of the channels. Based on one of the proposed design rules, this study has led to a new design rule which conforms to Eurocode 3. x
Steige, Yvonne; Weynand, Klaus | Design resistance of end plate splices with hollow sections | Steel Construction | 3/2015 | 187-193 | Articles |
KurzfassungThis paper presents a design approach for calculating rectangular hollow section (RHS) splices (bolted end plate connections) under tension forces or bending moments in accordance with EN 1993-1-8. Based on models available in the literature, a Eurocode-conform model is presented using the component method. The original model, based on experimental and numerical investigations, uses a three-dimensional yield line method to predict the tension resistance of bolted splices with hollow sections considering the joint as a whole. The adapted model is fully compatible with EN 1993-1-8. Moreover, the original model has been extended to predict also the design moment resistance of such RHS splices. x
Figueira, Diogo; Sousa, Carlos; Calçada, Rui; Neves, Afonso Serra | Design recommendations for reinforced concrete interfaces based on statistical and probabilistic methods | Structural Concrete | 5/2016 | 811-823 | Technical Papers |
KurzfassungA concrete interface is a material discontinuity that requires special care with respect to structural design and assessment. Therefore, the definition of design expressions based on experimental testing data must ensure the necessary reliability depending on the type of structure and its use. The present work describes a new proposal for the design of concrete interfaces subjected to shear loading for different roughness profile types. The proposal is characterized by three linear branches (for monotonic loading) and an S-N curve (for cyclic loading) and is the result of a parametric analysis of existing experimental data (obtained by the authors and also from an extensive literature search) based on statistical and probabilistic methods. Design expressions were defined in order to minimize the dispersion and variability of the safety factor values for each experimental test considered and also to assure that those values are within a target range (defined according to reliability considerations). These improvements became clearer when the new proposal was compared with the most common design code recommendations. x
Randl, Norbert | Design recommendations for interface shear transfer in fib Model Code 2010 | Structural Concrete | 3/2013 | 230-241 | Technical Papers |
KurzfassungInterface shear transfer between differently aged concretes is a topic that crops up frequently and in different situations in structural design. In the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 the fundamental basics of concrete-to-concrete load transfer are given in section 6.3 and the corresponding design rules in 7.3.3.6. The different potential mechanisms contributing to the shear resistance along the interface, i.e. adhesive bond, aggregate interlock, friction and dowel action, are thus combined and their relationship taken into account by interaction factors. This article summarizes the most important results from past and ongoing studies and presents the background to the theory forming the design basis of fib Model Code 2010, the “extended shear friction theory” (ESF). x |
