Ziólko, Jerzy; Mikulski, Tomasz; Supernak, Ewa | Deformations of the steel shell of a vertical cylindrical tank caused by underpressure | Steel Construction | 1/2016 | 33-36 | Articles |
KurzfassungUnderpressure in a tank with a fixed roof may arise in the final stage of its construction as well as during its usage. After completing the construction, when the tank is empty and all manholes and valves, through which air could get into the tank, are tightly closed, underpressure may arise in the case of a sudden change in the weather (air pressure and temperature), which is particularly dangerous in spring or summer. When the tank is in use, underpressure may arise if breather valves are obstructed, e.g. covered by snow during pumping out a product stored in the tank. Underpressure may cause extensive deformations of the shell or the roof of the tank. However, the shell undergoes deformation more frequently, since the roof has a stiff supporting structure. x
Zhang, Chun-Liang | Deformation of clay rock under THM conditions | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2015 | 426-435 | Topics |
KurzfassungAs a potential host rock for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste, the Callovo-Oxfordian and Opalinus clay rocks have been extensively investigated in the laboratory with respect to deformation under various thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions: (1) stresses covering the range from the initial lithostatic state to redistributed levels after excavation, (2) humidity variations representing ventilation during operation of tunnels as well as water migration from the far-field and (3) heating from ambient temperature up to 100 °C and a subsequent cooling phase. For these highly consolidated clay rocks, a new concept is theoretically derived to explain the effective stress in the particle matrix and experimentally confirmed. The mechanical deformation of the clay rocks is determined by means of short- and long-term compression experiments on quasi water-saturated samples at ambient temperature. Reponses of the clay rocks to humidity changes are examined by drying and wetting the samples under different loading conditions. Thermal effects are studied by heating and cooling the stressed samples under drained and undrained conditions. The main findings are presented and discussed in this paper. x

KurzfassungWith the use of tunnel boring machines under different geological and geotechnical conditions, the support with precast elements has been state of the art for decades. For the verification of the load-bearing and deformation behaviour of these high-strength reinforced concrete elements under exact known loading conditions, a test rig has been developed and implemented in a cooperation between experts of Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, SAE Fachbereich Bautechnik/Tunnelbau) and the Montanuniverität Leoben (Chair of Subsurface Engineering). The newly developed segment test rig allows biaxial tests on real segments. Due to the modular construction it is feasible to test segments with different geometries and dimensions. The obtained findings should be included in the optimization of these elements. Furthermore, the optimisation of the reinforcement design and replacement of steel bar reinforcement with fibre reinforcement is being investigated. With this test rig, an important step has been taken towards new technologies and materials in the field of segment linings. Currently, tests with distributed fibre optic sensing systems are carried out in cooperation with the Graz University of Technology (Institute of Engineering Geodesy and Measurement Systems - IGMS). A fibre optic sensing cable can be embedded in the segment during production and used for lifelong in-situ deformation measurements of the segment. x

KurzfassungThe recently completed Niagara Tunnel Facility Project in the province of Ontario in Canada is an extension of the Sir Adam Beck hydropower station originally built in the 19th century. The project includes the construction of a diversion tunnel to supply the existing hydropower station with an additional 500 m3 of water per second. The long-term stability of the unreinforced concrete lining is assured by a passive prestressed concrete lining according to the principles of Seeber. The operational water pressures reach 13 bar at the deepest point of the tunnel. In order to be able to monitor the slight deformations of the lining in the course of the prestressing process, an innovatively thought-out method of surveying had to be developed. The results of the deformation and long-term monitoring are presented. x
Hauf, Gunter; Kuhlmann, Ulrike | Deformation calculation methods for slim floors | Steel Construction | 2/2015 | 96-101 | Articles |
KurzfassungSlim-floor structures combine the advantages of prefabricated slab elements with steel-frame construction and lead to economic building solutions fulfilling the demands of modern architecture in combination with transparent structural envelopes without intervening columns as well as implicit flexibility for sustainable construction. Over past years, new slim-floor solutions have been developed to broaden the market for composite structures when compared with conventional concrete flat slabs. However, due to the shallow depth of composite slim-floor girders, their structural response, especially their deflection behaviour, differs from normal composite girders. The concrete is already in the cracked condition under service loads in regions of sagging bending moments. The contribution of the concrete chord to the effective moment of inertia Ii,0 of the composite cross-section and the bending moment Mc in the concrete chord are not negligible for the total loadbearing capacity of the composite section. These two effects are not normally considered when calculating the deflections of composite girders based on the effective width given in codes such as EN 1994-1-1 [1]. Therefore, the following paper will show different methods for calculating the deflection of these shallow types of composite girder. x

KurzfassungDeflection limitation of reinforced masonry building elements under bending is undertaken according in DIN EN 1996-1-1:2013-02, Section 5.5.2.6, Table 5.2 [N 4], by limiting the span lef or the ratio of lef to the effective depth d, for example lef/d ≤ 20 for simply supported beams. A further requirement in DIN EN 1996-1-1:2013-02, Section 7.3, states that reinforced masonry elements should not deflect excessively under serviceability loading conditions. For reinforced masonry with dimensions, which are within the limits stated in clause 5.5.2.6 [N 4], acceptable vertical deflection of a beam can normally be assumed. x
Zhang, Xutong; Far, Harry; Lin, Xuqun | Deflection analysis of welded steel I-girders with corrugated webs based on first yield | Steel Construction | 2/2023 | 127-136 | Articles |
KurzfassungSinusoidal corrugated profile webs have been popularly used in steel structural designs to replace the flat webs in conventional welded beams, while there are better performances in corrugated web beams (CWBs) regarding more stability and less material used to against beam failures caused by buckling. Previous studies have provided that CWBs enabled numerous favourable benefits to be recognised as alternatives to the traditional weld beams in designing structures. Furthermore, as CWBs are proposed as the major load-carrying elements, the maximum deflection in the elastic range is one of the important beam properties that should be precisely estimated and calculated. To find an appropriate method in computing the maximum deflection of CWBs based on the first yield for civil communities in Australia, proposed equations based on other standards will be employed to calculate the theoretical results for the comparisons with simulation-based results. While applying the linear analysis simulations provided by SAP 2000, ultimate limit state design theory has also been used with requirements stated by AS 4100. In this study, the results in theoretical calculations and numerical simulations have been compared to conclude that the highly defined equations by ASTM [37] and Sause et al. [38] could precisely estimate the maximum deflections of CWBs based on the first yield in conjunction with requirements and limitations in Australian standards, which could be adequate for the structural design calculations in Australian design fields. x

KurzfassungEpoxy-coated reinforcement (ECR) as a means of protection against chloride-induced corrosion of steel in concrete is used in only a few countries due to doubts concerning its effectiveness. A common misconception is that possible defects in the coating are particularly weak points as these might favour high local corrosion rates and thus loss of steel cross-section. This work discusses why a certain number of small defects can be tolerated. It is argued that prolongation of the initiation phase is caused by a higher critical chloride content compared with uncoated steel due to the “size effect”. Additionally, the propagation phase for ECR is likely to be extended due to the severely restricted cathodic area that limits the corrosion rate. This paper presents experimental and numerical tests to verify these assumptions. x

KurzfassungIn the course of the new construction of the Wehrhahn Line in Düsseldorf, works included the top-down building of the station at Schadowstraße with back-anchored diaphragm walls embedded up to 12 m into the Tertiary fine sand. The formation of the excavation was planned to lie above this in the Quaternary sand gravel. During the construction period, it was noticed that the Tertiary groundwater aquitard in the east part of the excavation is up to 2.5 m higher than forecast. This made necessary the installation of partially inclined suction wells in the Tertiary, in the protection of which the Tertiary groundwater was to be replaced by a surface filter. Altogether 41 suction wells were sunk. x

KurzfassungA mass movement of several m/year towards the Nolla stream was detected at the southern Heinzenberg (Grisons, Switzerland) in the 19th century. Debris flows originating from the upper stream valley reached the Hinterrhein valley at irregular intervals, creating temporary dams, which raised the river > 10 m above normal levels. Since 1870, comprehensive mitiga tion strategies, including torrent control and drainage of the 3-ha Lüschersee lake situated in the landslide area, have reduced the deformation velocity to approx. 4.3 cm/year and prevented further debris flows. x

Mensinger, Martin; Huang, Li | Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Akimitsu Kurita on his 70th birthday Optimized preliminary structural design of steel composite buildings using the Sustainable Office Designer - Comparing optimizations to satisfy different objectives | Steel Construction | 1/2017 | 17-22 | Articles |
KurzfassungPreliminary structural design is used for estimating and comparing design alternatives. It is mainly a manual procedure based on experience and documented in the form of design tables or charts. In an effort to automate this procedure for steel composite office buildings, the Sustainable Office Designer (SOD) has been developed as a SketchUp plug-in. It can generate optimized preliminary structural designs for given rectangular boundary shapes and employs a rapid approximate calculation instead of an expensive structural analysis. Steel columns are used and verified according to DIN EN 1993-1-1, while beams are designed as composite members and verified to DIN EN 1994-1-1. Pre-calculated design tables are used for slab systems. Optimization results are obtained and compared for different objectives, e.g. life cycle assessments (LCA) and costs. x |
