Gholipour, Masoumeh; Deylami, Ardeshir | Modified moment connection between I-beam and double-I built-up column | Steel Construction | 1/2022 | 55-67 | Articles |
KurzfassungDouble-I sections are widely used as columns in moment-resisting frames. The conventional welded moment connection between I-beam and double-I built-up column behaves in a partially restrained manner and does not provide the strength and ductility required in special moment frames. In this paper, a modification method is proposed to improve the behavioural characteristics of conventional moment connections. The modification involves replacing the continuous cover plate with two alternative plates having increased width and thickness at the location of the beam flange-plates. The behaviour of the proposed connection was investigated in detail both experimentally, by means of two full-scale specimens, and analytically, by means of eight finite element models. Based on the results obtained, in beams with a modified connection most of the plasticity develops remote from the column cover plate, and the panel zone remains in an elastic state. Accordingly, the deformation of the modified connection is reduced significantly and its stiffness is increased to the level required for a fully restrained connection. The hysteresis curves of the modified connection are also stable during large inelastic deformations with no substantial pinching. The modified connection provides the strength and ductility required in special moment frames. x
Kido, Ewa Maria; Cywi ski, Zbigniew; Kawaguchi, Hidetoshi | Tradition and modernity in the structural art of steel-glass structures in Japan | Steel Construction | 1/2021 | 55-63 | Articles |
KurzfassungThe Committee on the Design, Construction and Production of Aesthetic Architecture, established by the Japanese Society of Steel Construction (JSSC), has for a long time stood for the promotion of appealing architecture - particularly in steel-glass structures. Such aesthetic architecture, despite being very modern, often expresses the tradition of the particular location and its culture. The choice of structural configuration is one of the tools for achieving relevant architecture. This paper, introducing attractive and innovative steel structures combined with glass, shows several examples typical of this trend in Japan. x
Björk, Timo; Ahola, Antti; Tuominen, Niko | Distortional buckling of X-joints made of square hollow cross-section beams: theoretical energy-based model | Steel Construction | 1/2019 | 55-63 | Articles |
KurzfassungCurrent design codes do not consider distortional buckling failure modes, which can occur in the chord member of a tubular X-joint loaded axially by brace members. In this study the critical load for distortional buckling is established based on the energy method and a beam on elastic foundation (BEF) approach. In the theoretical model the capacity is created by elastic bending of the chord faces in their own planes and elastic bending of the cross-section as a frame structure. The theoretical capacity of an X-joint is compared with numerical results obtained from finite element analyses (FEAs). Some discrepancy was found between theoretical model and numerical analysis, with the theoretical model slightly underestimating the load-carrying capacity. Experimental tests show that an X-joint can be prone to distortional buckling failure mode. However, detailed scrutiny of distortional buckling failure in X-joints is only legitimate for joints made of high-strength steel (HSS), because other failure mechanisms are more critical when conventional steels are used. Nevertheless, designers of X-joints with rectangular hollow section (RHS) members should be aware of this potential failure mode. x
Magnusson, Johan; Hallgren, Mikael; Ansell, Anders | Shear in concrete structures subjected to dynamic loads | Structural Concrete | 1/2014 | 55-65 | Technical Papers |
KurzfassungShear failures in reinforced concrete structures under intense dynamic loads are brittle and limit the structure's energy-absorbing capabilities. This paper comprises a review of the literature dealing with the problem of dynamic shear of reinforced concrete elements, with a focus on parameters that control flexural shear and direct shear. In this context, dynamic loads refer to intense events due to explosions and impacts. For this reason, the initial response is also highlighted. Experimental investigations and calculations show that shear force and bending moment distributions in dynamic events are initially significantly different from the distributions under slowly applied loads. Therefore, structural wave propagation, geometrical properties of elements, strain rate effects and dynamic load characteristics need to be considered when analysing shear. The review also indicates that arch action in the shear span soon after the load has been applied has a large influence on the shear capacity of an element. This action is of particular importance in intense loading events. Finally, suggestions for further research are identified. x

Gertis, K. | Sind neue Fassadenentwicklungen bauphysikalisch sinnvoll? Teil 2: Glas- Doppelfassade (GDF) | Bauphysik | 2/1999 | 54-66 | Fachthemen |

Berndt, A.; Bauer, P. | Thermische Wirksamkeit von Luftschichten | Bauphysik | 2/1991 | 54-58 | Fachthemen |
