Müller, Andreas; Vild, Martin; Taras, Andreas | Decision tree for local + global imperfection combinations in double-symmetric prismatic members - Practical recommendations in the framework of advanced analysis | Steel Construction | 1/2023 | 2-15 | Articles |
KurzfassungBetter and simpler possibilities of structural optimization due to increasing computational power but also for reasons of environmental sustainability, the use of materials and their reusability lead to greater acceptance towards more advanced numerically intensive, so-called ‘design by analysis’ methods like geometrically and materially non-linear analyses with imperfections (GMNIA). The general choice of imperfections and their combination in such models, especially for slender cross sections of intermediate length prone to an interaction between a global and local plate buckling, is crucial in terms of the reached load-bearing capacity. Annex C of EN 1993-1-5:2010 makes use of the ‘70 %-rule’ for the combination of imperfection modes and amplitudes. This rule postulates that two GMNIA calculations should be conducted when local and global interactive buckling may be dominant; one with 100 % + 70 % of the maximum specified amplitude in either case. In addition, extended information is provided on the choice and combination of imperfections in the newly introduced and currently available draft of the prEN 1993-1-14:2020 (design assisted by finite element analysis). Although information is provided on how the local and global imperfections should be combined, it is not stated when it is relevant to consider those. Based on conducted GMNIA simulations on SHS/RHS (square and rectangular hollow sections) and I-shaped sections, this article presents general decision support on the choice of equivalent imperfections. On the basis of numerical analysis, the developed flow chart and design routine allow for the decision whether the consideration of the interaction of local and global imperfections is required or not. x

Nagl, Georg; Hübl, Johannes | Debris-flow impact and interaction with protection structures - Monitoring barrier at the Gadria torrent, Southern Tyrol / Einwirkung von Murgängen auf Schutzbauwerke - Das Messbauwerk am Gadriabach, Südtirol | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 1/2020 | 52-56 | Topics |
KurzfassungThe interaction between a protection structure and an acting process (e.g. debris flow) has only been described in a few publications so far. In particular, the acting forces and stresses have only been measured under real conditions in a few cases. Therefore it was necessary to design a monitoring barrier that could measure both the process parameters and the forces involved and their transfer into the ground. Such a structure was built 2016 in the Gadria torrent (South Tyrol). Data has meanwhile been measured, recorded and evaluated from five debris flows. With flow heights up to 2 m, densities up to 2,200 kg/m3 and velocities between 1 and 6 m/s, the measured impact forces could be compared with the existing loading approaches. The findings serve as a basis for the improvement of approaches for the design of protection structures. x
Walter, Fabian; Chmiel, Ma?gorzata; Hovius, Niels | Debris flows at Illgraben, Switzerland - From seismic wiggles to machine learning | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2022 | 671-675 | Topics |
KurzfassungWhere debris flows can impinge on the built environment, early detection of flow events is necessary in order to issue warnings and initiate countermeasures like road or train track closure. In this contribution, previously published work at Illgraben, Switzerland, is compiled, which shows how seismic measurements can be used for debris flow monitoring and warning. The advantage of the seismic approach is that debris flow signals can be detected at large distances eliminating the need for installations within or close to torrents, which are usually difficult to access. It is shown that seismic data contain important information about debris flows, including initiation, propagation, and particle sizes. However, machine learning algorithms, which are tuned with example data rather than physical principles, so far offer the best performance for debris flow detection with continuous real-time data. Such algorithms pave the way for a new class of warning systems, based on data science techniques rather than in-torrent instrumentation. x

KurzfassungRoads in the municipal Berchtesgaden are among the traffic infrastructure in Germany most highly endangered by natural hazards. Landslide, avalanche, rockfall and debris flow events led to repeated accidents and road closures. In order to improve the safety of main roads, a three-stage approach has been introduced by the responsible road authority, especially in the light of finding the most suitable and sustainable solutions quickly. The first stage was a systematic spatial detection and delineation of all risk areas, as well as assessment of the level of risk and the resulting urgency. Based on this assessment, a more detailed investigation was conducted, leading to the development of tailored protection concepts. The main criteria for the entire design phase of any measure have always been the necessary level of protection, reasonable costs and environmental compatibility. Matching all these requirements is critical for rapid construction and therefore a reasonable use of resources. A good example of this approach is the integral protection concept for the B 21 main road with its central structure of a multifunctional protection gallery near Baumgarten. This has been completed recently, and several other projects are currently under construction. x
Weh, Markus | Dealing with geological risk in Switzerland - Mix shield TBM on the Eppenberg tunnel site, field report / Umgang mit dem Baugrundrisiko in der Schweiz, Erfahrungsbericht zum Vortrieb einer Mix-Schild-TBM auf der Baustelle Eppenbergtunnel | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2021 | 537-546 | Topics |
KurzfassungOn the mix-shield TBM excavation of the Eppenberg tunnel, unexpected conditions were encountered in both the rock and soil excavations, which resulted in a modified execution of the project. In this case, the openly formulated contract made it possible to take advantage of improvements in the ground and to manage unexpected system behaviour with the right measures in such a way that economical and time-saving excavation was possible. In all three examples presented in this paper, time is one of the key success factors, because recurring processes result in feedback processes that change the system behaviour more and more rapidly as time goes on. In order to reduce the resulting additional costs and time losses, it is necessary to understand what is happening on site, then evaluate, test and check the possible measures, and finally decide on their implementation in a timely manner. At Eppenberg tunnel, this enabled unexpectedly adverse system behaviour to be overcome in two cases without any major loss of construction time. This was only possible because the responsible persons from all parties involved were able to discuss the situation together and make decisions at short notice. x

Goldammer, Klaus-R.
