Kratz, Thorsten; Vogel, Guido; Ouschan, Michael | Combined exploration drilling with digital data management / Einsatz kombinierter Bohrverfahren zur Vorauserkundung mit digitalem Bohrdatenmanagement | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 5/2021 | 626-636 | Topics |
KurzfassungThe purpose of exploration drillings in tunnelling operations is to investigate rock structure, geological composition of the rock, especially with regard to fault zones, and the identification and characterisation of water-bearing zones. When determining the quality of exploration, the economic parameters must be taken into account. The application of combined exploration drilling methods allows the successful drilling of exploration drillings even in complex geotechnical and hydrogeological rock conditions. The concept provides the flexibility to switch between drilling systems and to realise probe measures tailored to the specific geology quickly and according to economic requirements. For successful exploration projects, documents and findings from past projects are used in the planning phase. The use of digital drilling data management offers enormous potential for optimising data evaluation. The determination of machine, equipment and the preparation of a drilling plan can thus be prepared much more specifically for the upcoming exploration. During execution, direct conclusions can be reached regarding e.g. drillability or drilling tool condition on the basis of the process-oriented process analysis. x

KurzfassungThe Semmering Base Tunnel with a total length of 27.3 km is being excavated from the Gloggnitz portal as well as from three intermediate faces at Göstritz, Fröschnitzgraben and Grautschenhof. The geological conditions of the project are characterized by tectonically extremely complex rock formations with difficult geotechnical conditions. The excavation passes through numerous fault zones with deep overburden. During the excavation works, some large-volume collapses occurred. In this article, the collapse events are reconstructed from the available geological and geotechnical information. The reconstruction of the observed system behaviour is based on analytical and numerical calculations. The aim is to identify the respective failure mechanisms. x

Schafer, Benjamin W. | Cold-formed steel structures around the world | Steel Construction | 3/2011 | 141-149 | Articles |
KurzfassungThe objective of this paper is to provide a brief review of recent (over approximately the last five years) advances in the application, analysis and design of cold-formed steel structures. Attention here is focused on load-bearing cold-formed steel structures; as opposed to secondary systems, curtain walls, etc. Cold-formed steel applications continue to advance in three primary categories: framing, metal buildings, and racks. Examples largely derived from the author’s experiences in North America are used to illustrate the applications. The behaviour of cold-formed steel structures can be complicated due to the thin-walled nature of the sections; thus, analysis advances are required. Recent work in Generalized Beam Theory and the constrained Finite Strip Method demonstrate that, at least when it comes to thin-walled members, significant advances in structural analysis are still possible and desirable. Design of cold-formed steel structures continues to see significant improvements and refinements. Recent efforts related to the Direct Strength Method of design are highlighted, including novel extensions from the member to the system level. Finally, similar to many other areas of structural engineering, seismic engineering has motivated notable advances in applications, analysis, and design. For cold-formed steel structures these advances are reviewed to demonstrate current progress and future directions in this important area. x

Souza dos Santos, Eliane; de Miranda Batista, Eduardo; Camotim, Dinar | Cold-formed steel columns under L-D-G interaction - Experimental investigation | Steel Construction | 3/2014 | 193-198 | Articles |
KurzfassungThe paper addresses an experimental programme that is part of an ongoing investigation on the behaviour, strength and design of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns undergoing mode interaction involving local, distortional and global buckling. The 16 column specimens tested were selected to exhibit either (i) close local, distortional and critical buckling loads (PcrL ≍ PcrD ≍ PcrG) or (ii) PcrL ≍ PcrD (condition ensured via the cross-sectional dimensions) and PcrG up to around 20 % below or above that value (difference controlled via the column length). The test set-up, procedure and results are presented and discussed, and the failure load data obtained are used to explore the possibility of developing a design approach based on the direct strength method (DSM). x
Dubina, Dan; Ungureanu, Viorel; Gîlia, Lucian | Cold-formed steel beams with corrugated web and discrete web-to-flange fasteners | Steel Construction | 2/2013 | 74-81 | Articles |
KurzfassungSteel beams with corrugated webs represent a relatively new structural system that has emerged in the past two decades. The thin corrugated web results in a significant weight reduction in these beams compared with hot-rolled or welded ones. In the initial solutions the flanges were made of flat plates welded to the sinusoidal web sheet, which required a specific welding technology. A new solution is proposed in this paper in which the beam is composed of a web of trapezoidal cold-formed steel sheet and flanges of built-up cold-formed steel members (e.g. back-to-back lipped channels or angles or hat omega). Self-drilling screws or spot welding are used for the connections between flanges and web. This paper summarizes the experimental and numerical investigations carried out at the CEMSIG Research Centre (http://cemsig.ct.upt.ro), “Politehnica” University of Timisoara, in order to evaluate and validate a new technological solution. x
Höglund, Torsten | Cold-formed members - comparison between tests and a unified design method for beam-columns | Steel Construction | 1/2015 | 42-52 | Articles |
KurzfassungIn [1] a unified method for the design of steel beam-columns is presented. The method has been checked for rolled steel beam-columns and extruded aluminium beam-columns. It is included in Eurocode 9 [19] for aluminium members and it is proposed to be included also in Eurocode 3 Part 1-3 [16] as well, but then it needs to be checked for typical cold-formed sections. x
Ritakallio, Pekka O. | Cold-formed high-strength tubes for structural applications | Steel Construction | 3/2012 | 158-167 | Articles |
KurzfassungCold-formed hollow sections are the dominant tubular construction material. The applicability of cold-formed tubes is sometimes questioned because of doubts about low-temperature ductility, deformation capacity of welded joints, suitability for welding in the cold-formed corner, poor fatigue behaviour of the corner or suitability for hot-dip galvanizing. It is also claimed that by choosing hot-finished tubes, such risks can be automatically avoided. This study confirms that appropriate tube manufacturing yields cold-formed EN 10219 tubes in grades S355J2H to S460MH with a performance equal to or better than hot-finished tubes. Properly made cold-formed high-strength tubes are available for fabricating efficient lightweight structures and can be safely used even at low temperatures without the aforementioned doubts. x

KurzfassungTunnel construction is not immune to the climate crisis - here too there is an urgent need to improve the carbon footprint. The production of concrete and consumption of cement cause climate-damaging CO2 emissions. A tunnel with a 10 m diameter, for example, generates around 10 t of CO2 per linear metre. The main priority is thus to reduce the amount of concrete and steel reinforcement used and to select low-carbon cements and binders, as well as employing single-shell construction methods suited to the requirements of the construction project. We need to consider practical approaches to reducing concrete volumes which go beyond structural requirements. CO2 reduction in tunnelling starts with the design and approval process, so financial incentives must be built into award criteria and construction contracts. This article aims to highlight ideas which in future will play an increasingly important role in the design of underground construction works than is currently the case. Although many well-established work practices and design details in underground construction are based on decades of experience and are bound by normative and contractual framework conditions, it is now time to re-examine the facts and consider new ideas that reflect the need to reduce CO2 in concrete construction. x
Aldrian, Wolfgang; Bantle, Annika; Juhart, Joachim | CO2 reduction in tunnel construction from a material technology point of view / CO2-Reduktion im Tunnelbau aus materialtechnologischer Sicht | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 6/2022 | 799-810 | Topics |
KurzfassungTunnelling and underground construction is a material-intensive undertaking that involves the use of large quantities of concrete. Analyses of the life-cycle assessment of a new tunnel show that the carbon footprint is largely determined by cement and concrete consumption. Optimising the quantity used, composition and properties of this construction material is thus crucial to reducing ''grey'' emissions - CO2 emissions arising from the construction phase. While strength and durability requirements along with exposure classes are clearly set out in directives and tender specifications, CO2 emissions per cubic metre of concrete are not currently considered a relevant criterion when it comes to project design, award and implementation. And this, despite the fact that the current state of knowledge and research shows that substantially lower-carbon concretes could be used than is generally the case today. A paradigm shift is required to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality in the construction industry. x
